지금 부르고 있는 노래를 따라 그룹의 분위기도 정해지는 것일까. 멤버들은 입을 모아 지금이 너무 행복하다고 고백했다.
The group atmosphere might have taken after the song they are singing. The members confessed in unison that they are really happy now.
행복하지 않으면 오히려 이상할 상황이긴 하다. 수없이 많은 아이돌 그룹이 자신의 꽃을 채 피우기도 전에 사라지는 요즘 가요계에서 단 한 곡을 발표한 그룹으로서 지금 받는 엄청난 관심과 사랑을 생각하면 말이다.
Rather, it would be a weird situation if they aren't happy. In this music industry where many countless groups are disappearing even before their flowers bloom, as a group which has only released one song, they are receiving a lot of attention and love.
바로 SM엔터테인먼트가 선보인 신인 4인조 걸그룹 '레드벨벳'(웬디, 아이린, 슬기, 조이) 이야기다. 이달 초 싱글 '해피'를 공개한 그룹은 팬들의 열렬한 지지와 언론의 뜨거운 관심 속에 음원 차트 1위를 기록하고 음악 방송 1위 후보에도 오르는 등 무서운 기세로 인기몰이를 하고 있다. 멤버들을 최근 서울 종로에서 만났다.
It is the story of SM Entertainment's rookie 4-member girl group 'Red Velvet' (Wendy, Irene, Seulgi, Joy). They've released the single 'Happiness' earlier this month, with passionate support from fans and hot responses from the media, they've managed to clinch 1st on music sites and stand as a 1st place nominee on music program, gaining popularity and a scary pace. We met the members for the first time at Seoul Jong-no.
"연습생 때는 '데뷔할 수 있을까'라는 불안에 좋아하는 노래와 춤을 연습하면서도 걱정이 많았죠. 갈길은 멀지만 1차 목표를 이뤘으니 다음 큰 꿈을 더욱 구체적으로 그리며 노력하게 됐어요. 다음 목표요? 음악방송 1위에요.(웃음)"(조이)
"When I was a trainee, with anxiety such as 'Will I be able to debut", I practised songs and dances I like with lots of worries. Though the road ahead is long, I have achieved stage 1 of my goal, and working hard to draw a bigger dream with more details. My next goal? Winning 1st place on music programs. (laughs)" (Joy)
웬디는 데뷔 전후의 차이에 대해 "연습생 때는 연습곡만 불렀는데 이제 우리 노래를 들려드릴 수 있어서 기쁘다"라고 설명했고, 아이린은 "제목따라 그룹도 간다는데 노래가 밝아서인지 저도 많이 행복해진다. 주변 사람들이 많이 밝어졌다고 하더라"면서 미소지었다.
On the difference between before and after debut, Wendy explained "During trainee days, I could only sing practise songs, I am happy that I can let people listen to our song now", while Irene said with a smile, "The group follows the song title, because the song is bright, I became a lot happier. People around me have said that I've become brighter"
Just because they've debuted through a huge company, does not mean that their past efforts are light. The longest was up to 7 years, where they trained rigorously through the life of a trainee. What made this persistent effort possible
"옛날부터 노래를 워낙 좋아하고 음악의 영향을 많이 받았어요. 선배들의 무대를 보면서 자주 울컥해지기도 하고요. 그렇게 노래를 통해 받은 감동을 팬들께 돌려드리고 싶었어요."(웬디)
"I've liked singing since the past and have received lots of music influence. I've choked up often watching sunbaenim's stages. I want to return all these sensations I've received from music back to the fans." (Wendy)
웬디는 이어 "요즘 (아이돌 가수의) 너무 겉만 봐주시는 측면이 많은데 무대에서 노래를 부르고 싶다는 절실한 속마음도 알아주셨으면 한다"면서 "가수라는 직업이 아니면 안되겠다는 절실함이 있었다"고 당찬 어조로 고백했다.
Wendy continued "These days, there are many circumstances where only the surface (of idol singers) is being looked upon, would be great if people know the heartfelt sincerity to sing on stage" and confessed with a spirited tone "I have desperation to be a singer and can't do with other occupations".
한국 가요계에서 SM의 신인 그룹이라는 점은 상당한 자산을 갖고 시작함을 의미하지만, 그 자산은 이내 'SES'부터 '소녀시대', '에프엑스'에 이르기까지 쟁쟁한 선배 그룹과의 비교라는 부담으로 모습을 바꿔 돌아온다.
Although they started with a considerable amount of asset from the fact that they are a rookie group from SM, this asset has returned to them as burden from being compared to outstanding senior groups such as 'SES', 'SNSD', and 'f(x).
"선배들은 선배들만의 뚜렷한 색이 있었죠. 저희도 '레드벨벳'만의 색이 있다고 생각해요. 강렬하고 매혹적인 색 '레드'와 부드러운 느낌의 '벨벳'이 합쳐진 팀명처럼 다양한 매력이 있으면서 감각적인 음악을 들려드리고 싶어요. 부담이 없다면 거짓말이겠지만 이겨내도록 노력하겠습니다."(조이)
"Sunbaes has their own distinct colours. I think us 'Red Velvet' have our own colour too. Just like our team name that combines strong, enchanting 'Red' and soft feeling 'Velvet', I hope we can let people listen to sensual music with a variety of charms. Though it would be a lie to say that there's no burden, we'll work hard to overcome it." (Joy)
슬기는 "지금 우리는 신인이니 하얀 도화지 같다고 생각한다. 아직 채울 색이 많다"면서 "네 멤버를 상징하는 파랑, 주황, 분홍, 초록색을 흰 도화지에 조금씩 칠해가는 중이다"라고 설명을 보탰다.
Seulgi "We are now rookies, I think we're like a piece of white drawing paper. There's still lots of colours to fill in" and "We are painting the white paper bits by bits with our respective colours, blue, orange, pink and green" she explained.
그 색을 칠하는 첫 붓질이 이달 초에 있었다. 방송 무대에 데뷔하던 순간에 대해 멤버들은 "직전까지 실감이 나지 않았다. 별로 떨리지 않았는데 무대에서 갑자기 팬들의 환호가 들리는데 감격스러움에 눈물이 나올것 같았다"고 돌아봤다.
The first brush stoke was painted earlier this month. On the topic of the moment of debut on broadcast stage, the members recalled "It didn't feel real right until the moment before. We weren't really nervous, but suddenly we heard the fans' cheering on stage, and I think tears came out from surging emotions".
한편으로는 부담이겠지만 새로운 시작을 앞에 두고는 같은 길을 먼저 겪은 선배들이 역시나 큰 힘이 됐다. 티파니(소녀시대)와 최강창민(동방신기), 보아 등 많은 선배들이 '무대를 즐겨라', '떨지 말아라', '최선을 다해라'라고 자상한 조언을 건넸다고 했다.
On the other hand, though it may be a burden, with a new start in front, sunbaes who have experienced the same path first becomes a big strength. Tiffany (SNSD), Max Changmin (TVXQ), BoA and many other sunbaes gave caring advices such as 'enjoy the stage', 'don't be nervous', 'do your best'.
특히 모든 선배가 공통적으로 '(누구에게나) 인사를 잘하라'라고 조언을 했다는 대목에서는 잠시 SM의 '사풍'도 엿볼 수 있었다.
Especially, seeing as all sunbaes gave a common advice '(no matter who it is) greet well', we got a glimpse of SM's 'corporate culture'.
18~23살로 조금씩 나이 차이가 있는 네 소녀가 모인 그룹인 만큼 개성도 각기 다를 것 같다. 가만히 들어보니 다들 나름 입체적이다.
Four girls with ages 18~23 gathered in one group, just like the little difference they have in age, they have different individuality too. Looking at it, they have individual stereoscopic.
멤버들은 "맏언니 아이린은 귀엽고 장난도 많이 치지만 조언을 해줄 때는 진지하다. 조이는 그룹에서 막내지만 집에서는 장녀여서인지 귀여우면서 때로는 어른스럽기도 하다"고 소개했다.
The members introduced "Oldest unnie Irene is cute and have lots of pranks, but she's serious when giving advice. Although Joy is the maknae of the group, she's the oldest in her family. Sometimes she's cute, other times she's mature"
이어 "웬디는 마치 엄마처럼 항상 자신보다 주변을 더 많이 챙기고 그룹에 밝은 힘을 준다"면서 "슬기는 연습생 생활을 오래해서인지 내적으로 많이 단단하다. 그룹의 버팀목이 된다"라고 찬사를 보냈다.
Following "Wendy is like a mother, she always takes care of others more than herself, she gives the group a bright energy" Maybe because Seulgi had a long trainee period, her inner is very firm. They called her the groups 'crutch'
이제 한 곡을 발표한 그룹이 앞으로 그려야 할 궤적은 길고도 길다. 가장 화려한 무대에서 스포트라이트를 받는 행복한 시간을 향한 여정을 시작한 네 멤버의 마음속 각오가 듣고 싶었다.
Now that this group has released a song, the track they have to draw in the future is long. We would like to hear the inner resolutions these four members who have started their journey on aiming to receive spotlight and spend happy times on the most fanciful stage have.
"팬들의 사랑에 보답할 수 있도록 정말 열심히 하겠습니다. 결코 실망시키지 않는 그룹이 되겠습니다. 그리고 너무 큰 꿈일지도 모르지만…언젠가 선배님들처럼 전 세계로 나아가는 그룹이 될 수 있도록 차근차근 한 걸음씩 쉬지 않고 도전해 나아가겠습니다."
'"We will work really hard to repay fans' love. We will become a group that never disappoints. Also, not sure if it might be too big a dream...we will work step by step, without rest, to challenge to one day become a group able to tour the world like sunbaenims."
