CHAPTER 01: RED STAGE ON!
Red + Room = Red Velvet
Red + Room = Red Velvet
CONCERT DIRECTOR
Concert Director Shim Jae Won, who has fought alone
for over 6 months in order to present Red Velvet with the memories of the
unforgettable ‘first’ concert. He
will talk about the layers of time that has piled up for <Red Room> and
Red Velvet.
Please introduce
yourself first.
Hello, I am SM
Entertainment’s Shim Jae Won. I have been working at SM for 20th year (laughs). The artistes that I
have worked with includes BoA, TVXQ, SHINee, EXO and more. I have also worked
together on Red Velvet’s <Red Room>.
I am curious about
<Red Room>’s planning stages. What thoughts did you have making this
show?
Compared to the
concerts I have directed in the past, I troubled over this one for a long
period of time. I first started planning it alone during February of 2017, and
it took about 6 months. For the first time in my life, I stayed overseas for 2
months, going to places such as musicals, shows, exhibitions, expos, and even
circuses. I don’t discriminate any certain type and have watched around 50
pieces of work. While watching them, I made memos of the ideas I gained and
made a proposal. I thought about which artiste’s stage I can create from the
basis of this idea, and the friends that I thought of first is Red Velvet. I told
the company first that I would like to be the in-charge, and thankfully, they
approved it pleasantly.
In details, was there
an opportunity which developed into using the space “Girls’ Room” as the
background for the show?
I think the image that
the public thinks of Red Velvet, is that although they are a little unusual,
they have the image of loveable and friendly girls. I think they are a group
that stimulate curiosity especially in females of the 10, 20 age group. Thus, I
thought, ‘how about the audience and Red Velvet play along as friends in one
room?’ and started from this idea. From little things such as what females
would like to do with their friends usually, and then moving forward, fantasies
that they would like to do but can’t. Thinking about fulfilling these, I made a
show that has a high level of engagement (with the audience) using musical-like
elements. I also gave it a nickname ‘A Midsummer Night, Yeri’s Room’ (laughs).
I wonder if that is
the reason why, there was a wide variety of objet that girls would like. I
think the members would have liked it a lot as well.
Since we have to make
the story together with a variety of objets, the Red Velvet members have many
things to consider about. To give off the feeling of a musical, they have to react
to each other’s reactions, and also have to take into consideration the props
they hold. They were very awkward at first, having to absorb into those roles,
but they would later on even play around with those props, and they took in the
roles naturally. They also destroyed lots of props while fooling around
(laughs). Also, objets gets missing a lot in the middle, or they wear out while
practicing and can’t be used anymore. They are objets that have overcome lots
of hardships.
As a director, please
choose just one stage you were the most satisfied with.
Just the fact that Red
Velvet have put up a great show for <Red Room> is a very moving thing in
itself, therefore it is hard to choose one. Even so, if I must pick one, I want
to choose the ‘Be Natural’ stage where the members showed off their solo
dances. Although it was fluttering to welcome a first concert, in truth, we
have no choice but to also feel great pressure and nervousness together with
it. This is a really important day for Red Velvet, they might leave a trauma
under pressure, and mistakes on top of it. Red Velvet members are familiar with
standing on stage together as a whole, but as they have hardly experienced solo
stages, one solo stage would bring greater stress to them as compared to group
stages. There was limited time for them to practice, and their desire to
perform well was huge. Even when they are in fact doing great, they might feel
that it isn’t enough, and feel distressed. Therefore, when the members did well
in this stage, I really felt proud with a heart of a dad. I thank the members
who have done well.
Is there a reason why
you must add in that stage even though you know it will bring pressure to the
members?
Red Velvet are friends
who have very strong foundation skills and great performance. Therefore, I
really wanted to show the audience splendid performances from each of them.
Also, the fans really liked the Red Velvet’s stages where they are neuter
gender, but their girl crush charms stand out. I also wanted to give the audience a
greater moving moment by showing them a contrasting side as compared to the
lovable ones they have expressed in the front sections. Because this song was
before Yeri joined Red Velvet, I also wanted to complete the ‘Be Natural’ stage
with Yeri.
There was also Wendy’s
solo stage.
Wendy’s ‘Last Love’
was essential for the flow of the concert, also because that friend is
originally so good at singing, I wanted to entrust her to it. When you’re
playing with friends, while you’re about to sleep, you’ll think of many stuff
alone. I wanted to express the sensibility of girls when they’re together with
their friends, but later want to be alone for a moment. While creating this
solo stage, there was a very touching anecdote. Red Velvet members are really gentle
and kind. While they express
things that they want to do, they are always careful and will always worry
about whether they will bring harm to the other members. Wendy worried a lot
about whether she would cause trouble to the other members in the event where
she made mistakes in her solo stage. But on the other hand, the members were
worried for Wendy. The members found me separately and asked ‘Wendy would be
pressured by the stage, is there nothing we can do to help? What would be good
to say to her by the side?’ During practice and rehearsal, the members would
gather together and monitor, also if Wendy showed even the slightest
nervousness, the members would
come forward and give her a strength boost, and I find it really pretty.
While preparing for the
show, what is the part that you think is the most important?
First, is the level of
understanding, the performers, Red Velvet have of <Red Room>. I think Red
Velvet has to understand the flow of the concert as a whole, for it to be able
to be passed on to the audience. The performers that stands out on the show
needs to be able to accurately pass on the director’s intention and the show’s
story, for it to be able to reach the audience. Another part that I think is
important, is that I think it would be great if this show is a show that is
able to leave something behind for the audience. Later in the future, when they
think of <Red Room>, although they wouldn’t be able to recall the show in
its entirety, I hope that memories of what kind of story the show had, what
kind of image it had, and also how lovely the show’s stars Red Velvet were, are
able to stay in their minds for a long time. Just like how I’ve gained inspiration and improve my
quality of life from the shows I’ve watched from my two months overseas, it
would be great if many of them gained something from watching this show.
Please share your
thoughts on the successful wrap up for Red Velvet’s first concert <Red
Room>.
It would really be
great if many people know how lovable Red Velvet is. I see now as the start for
these friends who have boundless potential. I hope they will always be able to
promote happily. I am also very thankful to the staff who have worked hard
together, and I would especially like to convey a message to choreographer Ryu
So Hee, who have given training to the members for many of the dances, telling
her that she has worked hard. Thank you.
Lastly, please leave a
message for Red Velvet who have digested the first concert splendidly.
I have also
experienced celebrity life and worked here for a long time, thus I know the
hardships and regrets these friends have overcame. Therefore, I hope Red Velvet
will be happy while they work. We prove our existence by putting out
performances one by one. That becomes our worth. Because of that, in this place
that becomes the reason we exist, if Red Velvet could be happy, there is
nothing more I can hope for. You’ve worked hard, Red Velvet!
Full of Happiness
DREAM MAKER CONTENTS
PRODUCTION DIVISION
Throughout the <Red Room> concert, the fancy set
and objet that fills up Red Velvet’s stage and brings up the image of a musical
performance, is very memorable. Dream Maker contents production division
reveals the production process of the ideal stage and objet that comes into the
world from their hands.
Please introduce the
work that Dream Maker contents production division is in charge of.
The contents
production division starts from narrow things such as designing the visual of
the performance hall as a whole, to wide things like managing and being
responsible for the production parts all-around. From the concept meetings,
research, stage design, producing
floor plans, as well as ordering. Also, from these processes, we construct a
harmonious environment where we do not violate each other’s domains in
different areas such as sound, light, video, special effects and more, as well
as maximize each team’s effects through production meetings, to create the best
quality show.
Please explain the
stages of each section, as well as the concept of the props throughout the
concert.
The stages of
different sections are produced following the contents of the videos. We
created the show as one big story. For the stage concept, it could be divided
into three big sections. The first section is to introduce the 4 fairies hiding
in Yeri’s house, and each member appearing in Yeri’s room. Joy appears from a
dress room’s wardrobe, Seulgi from a living room’s sofa, Wendy from a study
room’s bookshelf, and Irene from the kitchen’s food storage area. The sets where
each member appears from are in their representative colors. The second section
has a feeling of the members having a pajama party gathered in Yeri’s room, a
gigantic canopy that is a representative element of a pajama party appears in
the middle of the stage. Telephones, hair salon, and nail shop were also
mobilized to express the girly feeling. For the third section, we sought to
create stages with a different atmosphere from the previous sections. With the
exception of the huge door in the middle, the rest were made to look darker,
for the audience to be able to focus better on the members’ performances.
Are there any images
or videos which you have made references to, or gained inspiration from while
constructing the stage set?
I am usually very
interested in decorating my room or in interiors. Because the concept as a
whole is ‘Yeri’s room’, rather than having the feeling of creating a unique
venue, I tried to maximize the effects of interior elements that are accessible
in daily lives on the stage. While thinking ‘if I were to call my friends over
for a home party, how would I decorate the space?’, and sought to give it a
small and cute feeling. At the same time, I worked hard on decorating it,
making the space one where the audience would go wow when they see it.
The ‘huge door’ placed
in the middle of the stage can be seen as the core stage set in <Red
Room> concert. I am curious about the process of installing the ‘huge door’
as the main stage’s equipment.
A ‘door’ is a medium
that connects one space to another. I thought that if each time the door opens
and a different concept’s space appears, as well as each section’s atmosphere
changes, wouldn’t the picture be diverse and interesting? I also thought that
it might arouse the audience’s curiosity by making them think ‘if that door
opens again, which member and how will they appear?’, and that is how the huge
door is placed in the middle.
Decorating the set to
make it look like Yeri’s room, utilizing diverse props starting from the bed,
beauty salon, campfire and more, the concept was visualized. What is the prop
that is the hardest to produce?
Although there aren’t
props or sets that were difficult to present, there was a prop in the
production area where I wasn’t able to stop feeling nervous about, right up
till the start of the show. It
is the pop-up book that Seulgi and Yeri opens up in the second song ‘Happily
Ever After’. The lyrics of the song starts with ‘A long, long, time ago, there
lived a girl’. I thought that it would be regretful if Seulgi’s performance of
opening up a book at this time involved a pop-up book that has no probability
in any sort of way. Therefore, I made a pop-up book myself. I thought that it
would be interesting if we could use Red Velvet members to express the lyrics and
appear out of the book when the lyrics sings ‘girl’. So therefore, in order to
comprehend a pop-up book’s construct and design, I did a lot of research. I
stayed up a few nights watching videos constructing pop-up books. After the
design came out, for quality purposes, I looked around for manufacturing
companies to entrust the production, but they all said that it would be hard to
produce them within the time limit. Thus, I did everything myself from drawing,
designing, printing, and producing. Honestly, the production process was so
complicated, I thought about giving up in the middle, but I couldn’t do that,
having greed after imagining the members performing on stage (laughs). During
the actual performance, when the image that I have imagined in my head was
captured on screen, the sense of accomplishment I felt is difficult to put into
words.
I think that the
diverse production has a big influence on making fairytale-like and
musical-like elements stand out. From the contents production division’s viewpoint,
amongst the stages that utilizes props, what is the stage or section that came
out the best?
I think that would be
the first and second sections. In
the first section, because of the opening atmosphere, we needed to present a
dark atmosphere, so we couldn’t see the movements for the opening set. But as
the closed set spreads out and the inner set springs out while the members
appear, seeing them again, I think they were well made (laughs). The canopy set
in the second section caught the hearts and visions of all the female staff
on-site. All of them said that they were going to hang it in their rooms after
the show ended. During the rehearsal, the members lay down on the bed and
watched the lighting decorations on the canopy. They said that it’s pretty and
I felt extremely proud. As a whole, for all the sets to be able to be eye
catching, they were colorful, small, and cute. I think these, and even the hold
able props used to present the stages, were able to keep the show’s concept
alive.
I am curious whether
there are any interesting episodes with the Red Velvet members while preparing
and using the props.
The members used
antique telephone stage props during ‘Lady’s Room’. During the first practice
before the members arrive, I took out the props that I’ve bought and the paint
smell as well as the smell of new goods were so strong. They need to put these
props near their faces and perform. I was worried that they would be bothered
by the smell so I wiped them with wet tissues and sprayed them with perfume.
After, when the members arrived, they took the telephones and posed their
postures. They went ‘Woah! There is an aroma from the telephone!’, them being
fascinated was so cute. Amongst the beauty salon props in ‘Don’t U Wait No
More’, there were scissors, and I made these scissors to be able to actually
move. Since I’ve already made it to this point, I thought it would be great if
the scissors can move and made the scissors’ motions visible. I heard that on
the day the props were first shown to the girls in the practice room, the
members played around with the scissors saying they would cut hair.
Many of the stage sets
were being switched in the middle of the concert, so I predict that the staff
would be very busy behind the stage. I think matching the timings during the
rehearsal would have been difficult. Please talk about the atmosphere or
anecdotes during the rehearsals.
Since the production
and on-site are all done from the same team, there was comprehension on the
strengths and weaknesses of the sets. In the case of this Red Velvet concert,
the canopy set was the one that has taken the most consideration. Although it
is safe, since it is gigantic, if
the staff don’t match each other well, an accident could occur. Therefore, I
couldn’t relax from the start till the end. Since
it is related to safety issues, I got more sensitive, and have also scolded the
staff who were moving the sets a great deal. Honestly, I feel very sorry.
Therefore, I relayed my gratitude and apologies to the staff at the after
party.
Although the concert
wrapped up in a success, were there anything you personally felt regretful?
Although you can fill
up the regrets that have resulted from a new experience in the next show, I
think I would feel so sorry for the artiste on stage if I were to leave regrets
from my capability. Therefore, actually, I have no regrets in this Red Velvet
concert. Doing my best to allow
Red Velvet members unfold their big dream of a first concert, it is a stage
where my dreams were unfolded.
If you were to choose
a stage you would like the audience to remember for a long, long time?
It is difficult to
choose any specific stage. The members of course, and also including all the
staff who have prepared for the show, everyone has put in their best preparing
for each song. As I have seen the preparation process, I have no choice but to
feel attached to every stage. I hope our sincerity and hard work have been
adequately relayed to the audience, and they remember them as good memories.
If there was another Red
Velvet show again, I am curious about whether there are any special stages or
concepts you would like to express.
Although the concepts
are determined according to the present situation surrounding the shows, rather than stiff concepts with somewhat robotic
image that are constructed using devices or videos, I would like to create a show that is able to express
the unique image and individuality that only Red Velvet can show, one where
they are warm, while refreshing and lively.
Please share your
thoughts on the successful wrap up for Red Velvet’s first concert <Red
Room>.
I think for us to be
able to prepare such a great performance is all attributed to the sweat and
hard work of the staff who have trusted and helped us. Stage, light, illumination, sound,
video, Vj, layher, truss, laser, special effects teams, transmission team director, and all
staff! Thank you so, so much.
Lastly, please leave a
message for Red Velvet who have digested the first concert splendidly.
Congratulations on
completing your first concert safely! While preparing for the first concert,
the members were the ones anticipating more than anyone else, and I have seen
them worked really hard. I have also worked hard with a pleasant heart, while thinking ‘let’s
create a stage that satisfies our anticipation!’ To the members of Red Velvet who have made the stage
shone even more through your cool performances, you’ve worked really hard!
Thank you for inviting me to <Red Room>, where I was able to make
pleasant and happy memories! Red Velvet hwaiting!

DREAM MAKER CONTENTS
CREATIVE TEAM
Dream maker directing team that helps Director Shim
Jae Won create <Red Room> together, from the skeleton to the fine
details. Hearing different aspects of <Red Room> from them. Also, they
are going to reveal the behind story to Red Velvet’s passion towards the show
that has touched the directing team.
Please introduce the
work that Dream Maker directing team is in charge of.
When a show starts,
for it to move forward, the directing team is a team that mediates the opinions
together with the directors from different divisions about the whole concept,
stage, music, clothing, VCR, production and more. We mediate all the work that
is needed for the stage to be complete and is a team that puts in their best to
satisfy the audience’s needs, and to leave an unforgettable memory for them.
Please explain the
concepts of each section of <Red Room>.
<Red Room> is
constructed with a total of 5 concepts. In the first section, when bubbly and
lively Red Velvet appears, they match with the dancers to make it like a
musical scene. In the case of the second section, choreographies were made in
harmony to each song’s story, and we constructed them so that they connect
smoothly like one big song. In the third section, the members showed off their
singing skills through calm songs. We decorated the stage so that they can
become one with the audience at the sub stage. In the case of the fourth
section, it is a space where Red Velvet shows off their other charms, through
boyish performances and expressing mature femininity. Lastly, we concluded with
a fancy one where Red Velvet can jump and play together with the audience with
remixes of their representative songs.
The theme for <Red
Room> from the start till the end is ‘4 fairies who came to Yeri’s room to
play’ as one big story. If there is a process or opportunity that led to
‘Yeri’s room’ becoming the main concept, please explain it.
The theme that becomes
the skeleton all started from Director Shim Jae Won’s idea. Considering Red
Velvet’s current age, the direction and construct of the show came from the
thought ‘if we gather girls from the 10, 20 age group, let’s make a cute lovely
show with fun contents’. Like ordinary girls with their friends in their daily
lives, going to the nail shop and hair shop with friends, staying up watching
movies and chatting all night long in one house, at times becoming eloquent
females flaunting their sexiness and more, we tried to show the charms of Red
Velvet through these.
I think the story as a
whole, matches very well with the group’s color. What does the directing team
think is Red Velvet’s charm?
Red Velvet is a group
that makes you anticipate what kind of image they will show you. They can be
lively girls, and then become mature ladies, they are a group with the charms
of a fairy pitta (T/N: a bird with many colors). I want to say that they are a
group that makes you anticipate and also become more curious about their future
moving forward.
Starting from Wendy’s
solo song, to the member’s individual dance stages, they left a very deep
impression. I am curious about what sparked the opportunity of adding solo
stages, or if there were any special meanings behind the flow of these stages
for the concert.
This section with the
solo stages was made to show Red Velvet’s other charms, other than the
refreshing one you would think of when you think of Red Velvet. Though Red
Velvet’s group performances are great too, I wanted to show off that they are
also a group with outstanding individual capabilities through this. The Red
Velvet members cut down on their sleeping time and practiced till dawn for this
stage. I think each of their charms were shown well during the actual show, so
I am very proud, and would like to thank the members who have worked hard.
There were many stages
that was like watching a musical. If you were to choose a stage that was
difficult to materialize but was successful, or a stage that you feel most
devoted to?
Although I feel
affection to all stages, personally, the stages in the first section left the
greatest memory for me. After Yeri appeared sleeping on the bed, the members
enter from different places. For it to have the effect of a surprise
appearance, I shared a lot of worries and worked really hard with the stage
designer. The pictures on the back side of the sets that the members appear in
were in their own colors and I have also looked into what they liked usually
and incorporated them. It is a set where I devoted into making each and every small
prop.
I am curious if there
was any interesting anecdote or any unforgettable incident while preparing the
show with Red Velvet.
Yeri’s solo stage
utilized a fan. I remember re-buying the fans a few times because she practiced
so hard, the fans would get destroyed in a day. Yeri was apologetic every time
they were destroyed, but on the contrary, we thought that Yeri was cool for
working hard. Also, I entered the practice room again late at night after a
meeting, and Irene was there alone. I was shocked and asked if she isn’t going
home, and she replied saying that she’s practicing on the parts where she’s
lacking. I remember that it was around 4am. I felt her sincerity in regards to
the stage, and in spite of her age, I think it’s respectful. Not only that,
Wendy, Seulgi, Joy would stay back till dawn after group practice and practice
on the parts where feel they are lacking. Seeing that, as a staff, they made me
think ‘I want to make an even cooler stage for them’.
After the show, was
there anything you felt regretful about?
During the talk time
before ‘Hear the Sea’, the members were looking for sweet potatoes in the
campfire for all three days. It’s a pity that I didn’t get to put any in. Haha.
While preparing for
the concert, was there any words that the Red Velvet members left for the
directing team?
Because it’s the first
concert, (everyone) was nervous and they themselves must be having an even
harder time. The members were always taking care of the staff around them, not
just the directing team. It is so beautiful to see them take care and comfort
them. They are artistes that makes you want to create more for them even if it
means to stay up for nights and makes you want to do better for them. I think
it was a blissful time for me getting to meet artistes like them.
If there was another
Red Velvet show again, I am curious whether you have any special concept you
would like to direct.
Since I have been very
attached to this show, I have not thought about that. If it were to happen
again, I will work hard to prepare a show that presents different charms from
this one!
Please share your
thoughts on the successful wrap up for Red Velvet’s first concert <Red
Room>.
When we go to work at
the hall, we would always say this amongst ourselves, ‘it’s time to go to
Yeri’s room!’. Although it’s a
funny story, it showed how much strong affection the staff working together had
towards the show. Although there are emotions invested in every project, I
think Red Velvet’s first concert will leave an even more special memory in my
heart. Thank you to the audience who came to <Red Room>, for laughing and
having fun with us.
Lastly, please leave a
message for Red Velvet who have digested the first concert splendidly.
Thank you for making
me love Red Velvet even more through this show, and also thank you for having
fun together with the audience. Thanks to the passion Red Velvet has shown,
that the staff was able to gain more energy. I hope that side of you guys won’t
change anytime, anywhere. You’ve worked hard for the concert!
New Brand of Red Velvet
DREAM MAKER CONCERT
PLANNING TEAM
The completeness of <Red Room> starts from Dream
Maker concert planning team’s meticulous communication and management. Dream
Maker concert planning team who has concluded the concert through good
communication between Red Velvet, the director, as well as staffs of each part,
they will be sharing stories about Red Velvet whom they have been anticipating.
Please introduce the
work that Dream Maker concert planning team is in charge of.
The concert planning
team is a team that oversees all
tasks of a show. We decide on the title and concept with the director, from the
overall of the hall to managing the budget, overseeing the preparation process
across the board, communicating between the related parts for the show,
managing on-site and more, we manage the whole production process for a show.
For <Red Room> too, we also decided on the title and VCR content with
Shim Jae Won, and participated in all production processes of the concert.
As much as this is Red
Velvet’s first concert, I think it would have left an extraordinary meaning for
them. I think the concert planning team would have made exceptional
considerations on that as well. Are there any messages or points about ‘Red
Velvet’ that you would like to appeal to the audience and fans through <Red
Room>?
The emphasis was
placed on showing Red Velvet’s diverse colors. This is a team where the members
have distinct individuality, and I think there weren’t many opportunities for
them to appeal this part all this while. We meant to show each member’s charms
in their solo concert to our heart’s content. Also, at the same time as
bringing each member’s individuality to life, we also worked hard to present
new sides which they weren’t able to show off before.
What do you think is
the most important aspect during the beginning planning stages of <Red
Room>?
As much as this is Red
Velvet’s first concert after their debut, I thought that we need to create a
show brand that is unique to them, one that is different but at the same time
coincides with their pre-existing concepts. <SUPER SHOW> for Super
Junior, <EXO PLANET> for EXO, show brands like these you think of when
you think of the artistes, I have also put in consideration to make a unique
show brand for Red Velvet moving forward.
Please tell us of any
episodes you remember while preparing for the show.
When we were eating at
the filming site for the show’s VCR, to chase the bugs on the restaurant’s
ceiling, a hot water bottle was hung. The members saw that and were so
fascinated, they took photos using cameras (laughs). It is a common item which
one would normally disregard, but the members were amused like little girls,
they are so pure and cute.
While preparing for
the concert, was there anything that was the most tiring, or any preparation
process that you remember the best?
I don’t think there
was anything too tiring while preparing for Red Velvet’s show. Actually, you
can’t help but feel tired while preparing for all shows. While overcoming small
difficulties, I think I was able to have fun thanks to the cute and lively
concept of the show.
During the concert,
amongst the words that the Red Velvet members have conveyed, what is the one
that left the greatest impression?
I am reminded of what
Irene said on stage on the last day of the show. She said that she was
surprised by the number of staff moving around to build the stage, and she
conveyed her thanks. Her frankness hit home for me.
Any stage that you
specially want the audience to remember for a long time?
If they remember the
story that the videos connect from the intro to the ending, I think the
memories of the show will linger for a long time. I also hope they will
remember the stage construct. That is because I have worried a lot in order to
put on a diverse show restricted to a space such as a ‘room’. This show was
made to be a musical-like show with Red Velvet’s exclusive charms as the focal
point. Audiences who have paid attention to the stage itself would have figured
out. Putting the door in the middle of the stage as the central, the structures
around it keeps changing. The staff practiced a lot in order to match the
timings during switching of the structures.
If there was another
Red Velvet show again, I am curious about whether there are any special
concepts you would like to plan.
Since the first show
started with opening the red door of <Red Room>, I think the second show
might not be a room, but another different space. Though I’m going to spare my
breath as of now, I want to create a concept that exceeds the audience’s
expectations. Since I think this is a team that still hasn’t been able to show
lots that they have in the first concert, I think it would be great to look
forward to their future concerts.
Please share your
thoughts on the successful wrap up for Red Velvet’s first concert <Red
Room>.
The first concert is a
production that holds tremendous meaning for the artiste of course, and also
for the staff who made the concert possible. I feel happy to be able to work on
this starting point for this team that has so much to grow in the future! Thank
you to the audience who have helped make this meaningful moment a successful
completion.
If you have anything
you want to see, or anticipate from Red Velvet?
I think Red Velvet’s
charms is that they possess both a dreamy while mature feeling, as well as a
girl’s liveliness at the same time. I think it would be great if they could
retain Red Velvet’s unique color in the future!
Lastly, please leave a
message for Red Velvet who have digested the first concert splendidly.
I hope this concert
will leave a good memory for the members, and also become a source of strength
for their future activities. I look forward to meeting them again at a new
concert not too long later.

abbreviation for ‘Artists & Repertoire’. The dictionary meaning states that
it is to discover talented artistes, and then make and give the artiste well
matching musical repertoire. SM ENTERTAINMENT’s A&R team basically works on
producing substantial physical and digital release with the artistes and
producers. Of course, this also includes music related to the concert.
The A&R team plays
a very important role in producing music in order to retain Red Velvet’s unique
conceptual. What kind of group does the A&R representative think Red Velvet
is?
When they first
debuted, Irene gave interviews explaining their team name as ‘strong color red
and smooth feeling velvet, it consists of the determination to show all of
these 2 sides’. I think this sentence explains Red Velvet the best. Rather than
us one-sidedly suggesting that this genre is red and this part is velvet, by
presenting the image as strong or smooth etc abstractly, I think it will be
more fun for the listener to presume the concept and make up the story
themselves. Because everyone has their own feel to the images, that’s why there
could appear to be lots of diverse new interpretations. I think these points becomes the
driving force behind how Red Velvet can challenge a diversity of concepts.
As a team that is
responsible for music, I think you would know best about the charms of the
artistes you are in charge of. What is Red Velvet’s greatest charm or strength?
Just like I’ve said
before, I think Red Velvet’s greatest charm is that they are able to show both
Red and Velvet concepts. Usually if a girl group is stuck in one type of image
or concept, it wouldn’t be easy to show new sides above that. There are many cases where the public
aren’t willing to accept new concepts. However, as Red Velvet has consistently
showed 2 different sides, they are naturally able to show diverse concepts.
From this point, by gaining recognition from the public, Red Velvet is able to
gradually widen their domain and I think this is the group’s charm and
strength. Red Velvet members have shared concerns and have been working hard by
themselves in order to be able to digest these 2 concepts well. Not sure
whether it’s thanks to this hard work, I think they in fact digest concepts
really well.
While watching the
show, I thought that this was a really difficult set list. What does the
A&R team think?
Red Velvet’s
choreographies have always been fast and consists of many detailed movements
that matches the rhythm, so as expected, we worried that the members would be
too tired. However, rather than having tired expressions, the members said a
lot that they want to do well. Because of that, I have high anticipation for
them, thinking ‘they will develop a lot after the show ends’ (laughs).
Do you have a favorite
set list flow? Also, if you have something you feel regretful for, what is it?
Wendy’s solo song
‘Last Love’ presented the show’s story really precisely, so I liked it.
Following the front sections that was filled with fancy and exciting songs,
night falls. As the members fall to sleep, Wendy wakes up on her own. I
especially liked it as it was like a monologue. If there was something I felt
regretful in the set list, it would be that ‘Somethin Kinda Crazy’ wasn’t
included. I thought adding this song into a set list to a show that has a
mystery and fairytale-like concept would add on to the dreamy and fantastical
atmosphere, so I suggested putting it in. Sad to say, it wasn’t included in the
final set list. After trying out diverse things with a regretful heart, we used
another version that brings Yeri’s narration in the original song to live into
the VCR video. Personally, I think this song matched well with the video’s
concept so I am satisfied.
Was there any song
that the members especially wanted to sing during <Red Room>?
The members have
always liked the song ‘Happiness’, and they were very excited to sing this for
the audience as the encore song. Maybe that is why they also looked so
confident while practicing. Also, the song that the members enthusiastically
suggested was ‘Shark Family Song’. During a normal day, the members would sing
and play along to this song amongst themselves. They were very enthusiastic in adding
the song, saying that they want to share with the fans the natural side of
themselves.
What is the A&R
team’s choice of the best performance of <Red Room>?
I think it’s ‘Be
Natural’ that kicks off for the velvet concepts and ‘Zoo’. I think the section
that started off with ‘Be Natural’ is the most fundamental stage that shows off
the show’s identity. Amongst it, starting from Seulgi’s performance and after
the members’ solo performances, it naturally goes into the chorus. While
appealing the members’ individual charms, I think it expresses the ‘Velvet’
feeling very well. Presenting a cool performance with an even more mature
atmosphere than the song’s 2014 release date. I think the rearranged song with
Wendy’s vocal source which connects the members’ individual performances
created the atmosphere well. This is the first time the fans have seen the
‘Zoo’ stage. I think the choreography is catchy and came out fun so I am
satisfied. There are many fans who like ‘Zoo’, and the response was hot having
the stage surrounded by the audience. As such, it was great seeing the members
having lots of fun for the stage.
If you were to choose
a point of <Red Room> where you really want the audience to know about?
Stage equipment and
display that looks like it was taken out from a fairy-tale book, and also how
the story flows with no boundary between Red and Velvet concept songs. It would
be great if the audience received the feeling of falling into Red Velvet’s
world through the show’s flow while watching it.
Please share your
thoughts on the successful wrap up for Red Velvet’s first concert <Red
Room>.
I think I have mixed
feelings. As a staff that has been together with them since debut, I am very
proud that Red Velvet has grown so much to be able to hold their own concert.
As this is their first concert, I could feel their passion and freshness.
Honestly, as the preparation time for the concert was short, there were a lot
of difficult aspects, but I was able to gain strength from seeing the members’
anticipation and heart fluttering emotions towards their first concert. I
worried a lot about whether the members are able to do well without any
mistakes within such a short preparation time, but they did so well till the
point where I felt ashamed for having even worried in the first place. It is
commendable that the members learnt about the enjoyment one can get only at a
concert as time goes by, and I felt delighted. Through this concert, I think
the members have grown another level, so it is also a delightful and meaningful
show for us.
Lastly, please leave a
message for Red Velvet who have digested the first concert splendidly.
I think another
special unforgettable memory was made for Red Velvet and their fans through
their first solo concert. Red Velvet promoted a lot in 2017. Especially since
they started to prepare for the concert at the same time as when they promoted
their summer album, they would have felt tired both physically and mentally. On
the contrast, I remember the members being able to find pleasure and
anticipation in it. I will cheer on Red Velvet to create even more blissful
moments in the future!
Move, Move and Act!
PERFORMANCE DIRECTOR
For Red Velvet to be able to present high difficulty
performances while putting on a poker face, there is a reliable assistant to
help make this possible. The performance director that brings Red Velvet’s
charms to another level with performances that brings even the details of
fingertips and toes alive. This includes recollections of the lady who has been
with Red Velvet since their debut.
When you think of Red
Velvet, their unique but at the same time cute choreographies are very memorable.
They are famous for their high difficulty level. If we were to characterize Red
Velvet’s performance, how can we express it?
Red Velvet’s
choreographies are powerful and has no resting time. The unique choreographies
are eye-catching and are created with detailed high difficulty moves. At the
same time, their choreographies also express refreshing and girly sides that are
unique to Red Velvet. This is their characteristic.
Amongst Red Velvet’s
choreographies, which choreography’s detail would you choose as the most
characteristic to them?
‘Rookie’ is comprised
of a very fast tempo, changing actions and movements with no breaks in between.
Amongst it, the point is the high usage of hands. During the chorus, whether
it’s the choreography where they dance while putting their fists on one side of
their faces, or the motion where they sweep their faces like cats, the members
had fun. I think the cute motions appealed well to the public.
In general, when one
thinks of Red Velvet, the choreographies that comes to mind are mostly the
‘Red’ concepts. Please explain the choreography points of the ‘Velvet’ concept.
Comparing to ‘Red’
concepts, ‘Velvet’ concepts are more lyrical and there are lots of poetic
expressions. Using waves or pelvis, the body’s line expresses that flexibly and
smoothly. Also, in order to not make it boring, emotions are conveyed through
motions that leave temperance and aftertaste. That is the difference with ‘Red’
concepts.
Since this is a
concert with dance stages as the focal point, it is a difficult set list to
digest. I think there would have been members who were tired during the
preparation process. How was the atmosphere during practice or was there any
episodes?
Due to the fact that
the preparation time was short and the fact that it is a first concert, I think
all the members must have felt pressured mentally. Even so, the members relied
more on each other, I think they laughed and had fun practicing. Also, after
overall practices ended, they stayed back till dawn to fill up the parts they
each lacked. All of them practiced passionately.
Please talk about each
member’s dance style.
First of all, Irene’s
dances are seasoned. Despite not having a large build, her actions are huge and
powerful, while at the same time flexible. In the case of Seulgi, her dances
are very precise, and her strength is that her actions are clean. She’s a
member that possess the best dance skills with no explanations needed. In
Wendy’s case, as time passes, her dances become even more cleaner, and is a
friend who digests the dances precisely just as she had learnt. Normally as one
does more stages, most of them would naturally change the choreography into
their own style. She is a friend who overcomes her burden towards dancing with
endless hard work and practice. Joy’s strength is her feminine silhouette.
She’s a member that is always worrying and researching about how to express the
dances more charmingly by maximizing her distinctive strength and incorporating
them into the diverse actions. Personally, as I was teaching, this is the
member that is the most ambitious and makes you look forward to her future
growth. Yeri learns the choreographies the fastest. She’s the first to catch
the choreographer’s intentions and expresses them into her own style well.
‘Be Natural’s solo
stages were very memorable. The fans’ responses were very hot as well. How did
you view this stage?
As the members had to
practice in a short amount of time and then fill up the stage alone, they would
have felt burdened. As such, the members practiced this stage a lot by
themselves. The members’ growth was visibly shown through this stage, so I am
very proud.
With the concert up
ahead, amongst the words the Red Velvet members have said, what left the
greatest impression for you?
It was ‘Thank you for
always being with us from the start till the end, it’s dependable.’ Because the
Red Velvet members said that, I think I was able to gain strength and be
together as a member of the concert.
Please choose 3 best
performances and the reason why.
Firstly, I really
liked the formation of the opening stage ‘Red Dress’ and ‘Happily Ever After’.
I think the performance was very good as it uses the bed and pop-up book,
fitting to a musical concept. The members’ and dancers’ detailed expressions
and acting were very impressive. The colorful set on top of the costumes was
what was able to make it the most fanciful and strongest opening stage.
Secondly, ‘Zoo’ was impressive. The audience’s explosive response added on to
this exciting stage’s completion. Lastly, as expected, ‘Be Natural’. Starting
from the members’ solo dances till the end of the song, this is a stage where I
felt both nervous and proud. I made the choreographies stand out with the
intent to bring the individual members’ dance style to life while magnifying
their strengths. In many ways, this stage was meaningful and memorable.
You’ve been with them
since debut. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that you’ve seen the Red
Velvet members’ growth up close. When was it that you have felt the Red Velvet
members’ growth?
Different from when
they debuted, when they themselves talk about what kind of music or dance style
they want to do, and when they talk about the team’s directions in detailed
precisely. Also, when they work hard on their lacking areas and search for new
things to learn by themselves. Looking at them work hard and develop
themselves, I felt ‘they are growing as artistes’. Thanks to this, I think I
came to hold even more affection to the team Red Velvet.
Please share your
thoughts on the successful wrap up for Red Velvet’s first concert <Red
Room>.
While preparing for
the concert, the members and I rely on each other, and I remember working hard
preparing in a family-like atmosphere. Starting from the production team, to
the choreography team, management team and so on, there were many staffs
working for <Red Room>. I think <Red Room> was able to be
successful because everyone had both top skills and top teamwork that can’t be
found anywhere else. I am honored to part of the best project.
Lastly, please leave a
message for Red Velvet who have digested the first concert splendidly.
The concert that
we/they have been talking about ever since their debut really came true, and
the fact that I was able to be part of it still feels like a dream and it’s
fascinating. It is only possible because it’s you guys. I am grateful and
thankful for you guys always being by my side! I hope that in the future, even
more people will know about and receive the positive energy which a team called
Red Velvet has. I believe that you guys will become great people and artistes
who will be remembered in people’s hearts for a long, long time even as time
passes. Let’s be happy, guys!
One Summer Night
CONCERT VCR DIRECTOR
The one that played a big role in understanding the
whole story of <Red Room> concert is none other than the concert VCR
videos. The story of a midsummer night together with Yeri and the Red Velvet
fairies is being told by the video director.
I think the concert
VCR videos plays a role in connecting the whole story of <Red Room>. How
did you come up with the concert synopsis of ‘4 fairies who came to play in
Yeri’s room’?
Firstly, for a show’s
VCR video, I think the most important part is for them to bring the show’s
general concept to life. I started working with the thought of how it would be
to bring Red Velvet’s distinctive fantasy-like
and unique individualities to life, while at the same time with fun elements
with ‘girls’ room’ as the focal point that is well-fitting to <Red
Room>’s concept.
Amongst the five
members, is there a reason why Yeri was chosen to be the room’s owner?
As Yeri is the maknae,
I think she will fit a girl’s innocent feeling the best. She has a lot of
curiosity and is goofy, while at the same time with the image of having a lot
of fears, thus she would be good to express the main character. I thought it
would be very fun to watch how the rest of the members surprise naïve Yeri with
their individuality and charisma.
What is one topic that
the whole concert VCR videos talk about?
I wanted to show
‘imagination, and fantasy’. I wanted to express an imaginary world just like a
midsummer night’s dream. Anyone would have imagined ‘do fairies really exist?’
when they were young. Therefore, in this concert’s VCR videos, I wanted to
bring back the innocence of childhood, turn the members into fantasy characters
and show them having a fun party. Though the story’s ending wasn’t decided, I
hope even if it’s just a teeny little, the audience was able to feel joy and
happiness through the videos.
I think there would
have been many interesting episodes in the middle of filming.
There was a scene
where the 4 members climbed the walls of Yeri’s house and entered through the
window. While filming, I was very worried about whether the members would get
hurt, but the members acted the scene bravely without any single NG. There was
also a scene with popcorn as the props, and the members kept eating them. It
was to the point where I had to tell them to stop eating (laughs). Seeing them
like that, I felt that they are very pure and cute.
Amongst the concert
VCR videos, what was the episode that the director personally likes the most?
I like the first
episode the most. It’s an episode where Yeri was eating with her parents but
the fairies appear one by one to surprise her. I liked that the members’
entrances were individualistic, and Yeri’s reactions came out cutely so it was
fun.
If you were to choose
a member whom you think will do well in acting?
Everyone was very
individualistic and acts well. The whole filming was fun, watching Red Velvet
members be like girls. Even so, if I must pick one, I want to pick ‘Seulgi’.
The role Seulgi is in-charge of is the ‘eating fairy’, and she snatched Yeri’s
snacks so very casually. Actually, it is very hard to act well in eating, but
even so, Seulgi was faithful to her role and kept eating well (laughs).
Your thoughts on
watching the VCR videos at the concert venue?
I think a concert
venue is always overwhelming and exciting. That is where you can feel the
numerous audience’s responses with your body most closely. When the audience
cheers and shouts at the scenes where I intended to, it was eye-watering level
of touching. This time as well, I wasn’t able to relax until the end, and even
after coming home, I read through the reviews that the audience had left
thoroughly. In the fairies’ waiting room, there was a scene of Irene ironing.
The response at that part was very hot, it is fascinating and I felt proud.
Lastly, please leave a
message for Red Velvet who have digested the first concert splendidly.
I miss you guys
already, Red Velvet! I miss you guys’ laughter that rang all throughout the
whole filming. Thank you for smiling brightly and working hard filming even
though you must have been tired. I feel proud watching you guys on top of the
stage. I feel happy to be able to work with cool friends like you guys. Let’s
meet again for an even better project next time. I’m always cheering you guys
on! Hope you fairies will shine even brighter in the future!
A Strong Support
MANAGEMENT TEAM
If anyone asks who watches Red Velvet the most up
closely, of course it would be the management team. They who have always been
together by Red Velvet’s side, and acts as the members’ reliable support, SM
ENTERTAINMENT’s management team relays their story of Red Velvet.
Please introduce.
I am from the SM
ENTERTAINMENT management team and started working as Red Velvet’s manager since
the preparation period for ‘Russian Roulette’. I have been with the members for
1 year and 6 months now.
You watch the members
up close and are with them more than anyone else. What are the Red Velvet
members like as a whole?
These friends are a
little shy of strangers. I too took quite some time before I became close with
them like this now. They are very
simple and earnest people who never does work which they are responsible for
negligently. Portraying them as students, should I say that they are a
gathering of model students who studies hard? Also, they have cute charms and
takes care of the people around them well.
While preparing for
the concert, I think the management team would have focused a lot on managing
the members’ stamina and condition.
Although the members
take care of themselves well usually, we took extra care in order to prepare
for the concert. Even when the members are tired, they have a strong mentality
to keep going. We pay even more attention to keeping meals on time or
replenishing the members’ energy by giving them vitamins.
What are your thoughts
watching Red Velvet perform for <Red Room>?
These friends are
quiet and gentle people below the stage but they release their intrinsic
abilities on stage. That’s why, there are times where I get shocked too during
television promotions. At the time of <Red Room>, I was backstage and
would go out to watch the stages if I have time to spare. I got teary on all 3
days every time I watch the opening stage. It was very touching, and I still
can’t forget about it.
I am curious about the
‘after-party’ after the first concert. Are there any anecdotes on the after
party?
Although this is not a
story about the after-party itself, I remember the talk we shared while
travelling to the after-party venue. Of all things, I was in charge of the
after-party. I was very nervous because this is a place for the numerous people
who have prepared for the concert. Throughout the whole travelling time, the
members and I were giving ideas on how to ‘toast’, and they released much of my
nervousness. Even though the main star of the after-party is ‘Red Velvet’, they
were taking care of the nervous me instead. In the end, for the toast, we used the
chant that they always shout before standing on stage. ‘Red! Velvet! Let’s!
Have! Fun!’ (레드벨벳 흥을 돋우자!)
What kind of stories
did the members share at the after-party?
They kept saying ‘I
want to do it again.’, ‘such a pity.’, a lot. They have fully grasped the taste of a concert
(laughs). These friends who have said they were tired and exhausted while preparing
for the concert are saying ‘looking back, it was nothing!’.
How do the members
spend time at the waiting room or backstage on a normal day?
There are many cases
where they either listen to music or sleep. There was also one period where
they were into games. The would gather around and have a lot of fun playing
games like ‘I am ground’ in the waiting room. Also, there was a period where
Yeri would play around using video apps to take fun videos with the members.
Although you are the
members’ manager, I heard you are no different to a real older brother. Were
there times where the members talk to you about their inner thoughts?
Yes, since I am also a
person with many lacking aspects, even if there are things that I cannot solve,
I try to listen and relate to them. There are times where the members are
physically drained, in those circumstances, I try to get them the things they
need and try my best to replenish their energy.
Lastly, please leave a
message you want to convey to Red Velvet.
You guys have done
well from debut till now, it is very commendable that you guys have safely
accomplished the first concert, one which could be considered a new leap forward.
It’s so great to see you guys grow one level by one level. I hope that you guys
can continue doing well this way without any hitches. Even when I comfort you
guys, there are also times where I was harsh, I am thankful that you guys
aren’t disappointed and put trust in me. You guys wrote me a letter before
saying ‘if oppa ever feels tired, please tell us’, it’s great to see you guys
always taking care of the people around you like this. Let’s get along in the
future well too just like now!
Open the Red Room Closet
STYLIST
Stylist who decorates Red Velvet to the most
Red-Velvet-like. We will reveal Red Velvet’s <Red Room> styling story
that is told by the lady herself.
As much as the show
consists of diverse concepts, I think the costumes have their own distinctions
during each section too.
The show’s construct
is about the 4 members finding Yeri’s room, and the 5 of them making a new
space and world together, later known as <Red Room>. To match this, the costumes were in
Red Velvet’s representative colors, and at the same time made to evoke a
mysterious and fantastical feeling. Because I think the opening section is the
section that is the most indicative of <Red Room>’s direction, I used
fanciful colors. I also mainly used sequin materials and more to stand out on
stage in order to place emphasis on the mysterious feeling. For the second
section, I gained inspiration from the uniform look which the main characters
of the movie <Moonrise Kingdom> wore. I integrated the boys’ boy scout
look and the girls’ pastel tone look into the <Red Room> costumes. For
the third section, I think black suits express the atmosphere of Red Velvet’s
song, ‘Automatic’ the best. Also, I wanted to give a totally different feeling
as the previous sections through suits. In the last section, I thought it would
be great if we could feel like we all went back together to when Red Velvet
debuted, along with the ‘Happiness’ performance. Gaining inspiration from the
costumes of ‘Happiness’ promotions, they were produced with uniformed design
and material.
While preparing for
<Red Room>’s costumes, what do you think is the most important styling
point?
I think it’s very
important whether (the costumes) are able to express the feelings of each
section. Director Shim Jae Won has explained each section’s story and the
intended feeling and direction, amongst it, my idea was applied into <Red
Room>’s styling.
Each member of Red
Velvet has their representative color. Are you normally the type that does the
styling while keeping their colors in mind?
During ‘Red Flavor’, I
applied their individual colors into the styling. To match the fruity concept
of the music video, diversely colored fruits were used and I think there is no
better way to show the members’ individual colors. Other than that, there are
times where I style while keeping their colors in mind, while there are also
times where I avoid them intentionally. Although each member’s individuality
could be presented through their representative colors, on the other hand, it
would hinder them in showing off diverse charms.
Most of the costumes
of the concert must have been (specially) produced, please tell us about the
production process or episodes.
Other than the
costumes of the second section, all of the costumes were made just for the
concert. As much as this is Red Velvet’s first concert, I collaborated with
designers who are able to maximize Red Velvet’s charms in each section. I went
to great efforts and worked hard with fashion designers to produce the best
quality. The opening costume was a collaboration with brand ‘YCH’s Yoon Chun
Ho, who has always put up cool shows through fanciful designs and amazing
techniques. For the third section, in order to express the silhouettes, I
worked with Hong Sun Young, who possess outstanding senses and utilizes classy
materials. The last section was produced with Minjukim, who has a deep
relationship with Red Velvet and knows the group’s color best.
As much devotion you
have poured into it, I think you would have a costume you feel most affection
for.
I feel most
affectionate towards the costumes in the opening section. I think it presents
the concert’s color well and also shows off each member’s charms.
In Red Velvet’s
styles, the accessories stand out. I think you have thrown your heart and soul
into accessories, what do you think?
Amongst the
accessories, I think the ear rings receive the most attention. I am the type
who always worries about the accessories after finishing the costume concept
meetings. I would imagine in my head the style’s accessory that I want, gather
samples and look for items. If the design I want isn’t available, I would
produce them myself. With the
desire to perfectly express the concepts each time, other than using common
subsidiary materials, I would also utilize a variety of materials. Vintage shop’s badges, matchboxes,
magazine covers and more, I gain inspiration from various places.
I am curious about the
members’ own styles. Please talk about each member’s style of preference, and
if you were to choose a member who dresses the best?
I don’t think each
member has a style that they especially prefer. All the members try out a
variety of styles no matter on stage or not. Everyone likes to challenge
themselves and dresses well.
Please leave your
thoughts on completing a successful concert and a message you want to convey to
Red Velvet.
I am sincerely happy
from the bottom of my heart to be able to be part of a meaningful show such as
Red Velvet’s first concert. Although there is no way to fully know Red Velvet’s
hard work, I thought that they must have worked really hard without rest all
this time and that it must have required a great amount of effort and patience.
I will look forward to even more brilliant Red Velvet activities in the future
and I am always cheering you guys on from the back.
Fruits Lush
MAKE-UP ARTIST
Lovely fruity group Red Velvet that reminds you of the
children song ‘My Face Like an Apple’! Red Velvet’s make-up artist makes lovely
transformations by bringing the five girls’ charms to life. This is their
<Red Room> story as well as Red Velvet members’ beauty secrets.
Please explain <Red
Room> concert’s make-up concept.
As much as this is Red
Velvet’s first concert, more than anything, I want to give them make-up that
would make the members shine the brightest. While
bringing their individualities to life, the focal point was the distinctive and
sparkling eye make-up.
It is important to
include each member’s individuality even amongst a uniform concept, was there
any make-up point which you emphasized for each member?
In the case of Irene,
Wendy, and Yeri, their characteristic is that they have pale and clear skin. At
the same time as bringing their skin’s asset to life, I used blusher and lip
color to give it vitality. Also, all three of their eye make-up uses pearls to
give it a bling bling feel, and places emphasis on the eyelashes. In the case
of Joy, I worked on red lips as the point and shade eye make-up. For Seulgi’s
case, since she has mono-lids, you would think the emphasis would be on her
eyes, but on the contrary, to make her eyes profound, shade eye make-up was
applied along with matte lips to give it a refined feeling.
You watch Red Velvet
up close. If you were to choose each member’s charming point?
These friends are so
lovable when they are smiling/laughing, you really can’t leave out any single
one. Therefore, when I do the make-up, I put in a lot of effort so as to not
disrupt the member’s innate beauty. Even so, if I must choose each member’s
charming point, there is nothing more to say about Irene’s pale skin, right?
Also, her pretty eyebrows and abundant eyelashes are very beautiful. Seulgi’s
mono-lids are her greatest charming point. For Wendy, her clear and transparent
skin which can’t be bought with money, she is also a possessor of full lips! In
Joy’s case, wouldn’t her biggest charm be her straight eyebrows and unique
attractive look of her eyes? I also think her full lips are very charming too.
For Yeri, her blemish-free and clear skin, as well as round and large eyes. Her
V-line jaw is also very charming.
How interested are the
Red Velvet members in beauty?
First of all, Irene is
the type who cares a lot about beauty and health. She has a meticulous
personality, she knows a lot about her own face, and is a friend who looks into
details very well. Joy is a friend who is very interested in beauty. I think
she is a friend who has the temperament of a cosmetic mania. She’s been
obsessed with collecting lipsticks recently. Seulgi has a lot of interest in
both fashion and beauty, she knows the attractiveness of her face and is a
friend who does eye make-up very well. For Wendy, although she has a lot of
interests, she has ‘poop-hands’*(?), haha. Not sure if it’s because Yeri is
young, I don’t think she has a huge interest in beauty as of yet.
*T/N: poop-hands is a
slang used to describe someone who is bad at handicraft, example, drawing etc.
In this context, the stylist is saying that Wendy cannot do make-up well in her
opinion.
Fans do self-make-up
to follow Red Velvet’s make-up, do you have any tips on that?
Apply light and lively
blusher and find a red lipstick that fits you. Also, if you make every strand
of eyelash come to life, you can have the feeling of lovely Red Velvet make-up!
You weren’t able to
enjoy the stage as an audience. The first concert of artiste Red Velvet whom
you treasure! What are your thoughts watching from backstage?
I have always said
this to the members ever since debut. Work hard and let’s definitely accomplish
a first concert! When I watched Red Velvet put on a solo concert through
<Red Room> with the numerous experiences that they have piled up one by
one in the meantime as time passes, I was so overwhelmed, and super proud.
While watching the members have fun and complete the show professionally, I
have also discovered sides of them which I have not known before.
Lastly, please leave a
message for Red Velvet who have digested the first concert splendidly.
Red Velvet have
trusted me and have been with me, in order to repay that loyalty, I study hard
and work hard. Thank you for always becoming my healthy stimulant. As much as I
have believed that Red Velvet would be able to hold their own solo concert,
thus I am happier than anyone else for your successful accomplishment! Don’t
stop here, go out more to national tours, Asia tours, and even world tours!
Let’s run, I love you!
Let’s Do Hair Play
HAIR ARTIST
Diverse hairstyles which amplifies lovely Red Velvet’s
charms were created from the hands of this lady. The hair artist in charge of
<Red Room> will talk about stories of Red Velvet’s hair in the concert.
Please explain the
members’ hair concepts in <Red Room>.
I worked hard on
making the members’ hairs lively and girly, fitting to the concept of <Red
Room>. Before the concert, while we were watching the dance videos with the
members, we talked about what kind of feeling we want for each section.
Reflecting on the members’ opinions of wanting as many different appearances as
possible, I gave little alterations to the hairs during each section. At the
start, I gave it a point by using accessories, and gave a lively feeling by
using pigtails which can be made quickly. For the latter section, to give it a
sexy feeling, it was a calm yet feminine styling to give a reversal image.
While styling for
them, what image do you think each Red Velvet member has?
I think Red Velvet’s
charm is that all five members each have their own different charms. Therefore,
even if I do the same styling, each member digests them differently. For Irene,
I construct her styling with a lady image as the background. Because Seulgi’s
face possesses lots of attractive points of an Asian, I decorate it naturally
while grasping special points in within. Although Wendy has a bubbly image, I
wanted to give her an unusual feel so I worked hard on giving her a fanciful
styling. Because Joy and Yeri shows different feelings as according to their
styling, I gave them bold and unusual styles.
Who is the member with
the most interests in hairstyling?
Joy. She’s a friend
who always wants to show different appearances with new stylings. She would
jokingly say ‘same stylings are boring~’. In actual fact, she is a friend who
digests any kind of styling well.
While planning the
hairstyling, were there any images you take reference from or materials you
gain inspiration? Also, how do you usually come to encounter these images or
materials?
There are times where
I reference classic hairstyles, though it’s not fixed, I look for ideas while
looking at pretty characters. Actually, there are many times where the fans see
the members’ styles and give it a nickname or name it a special character. When
I saw them call Joy’s red hair the mermaid ‘Ariel’, I felt proud and good. That
style reflected lots of Joy’s opinions, and in truth, in order to get the
bright red color, she bleached and dyed her hair many times. Yeri’s ‘pucca
hair’ was also a nickname given by the fans, but actually, I don’t think Yeri
likes cute styles. I’m the kind who gives them cute hairs one-sidedly, and I
would appeal to Yeri by showing her the fans’ responses, haha. Also, while
planning the hairstyles, the friend who is the most careful and contacts me the
most is Irene. Though she has lots of worries, she is a friend with a strong
spirit to challenge, therefore, she is like my muse when I’m doing hairstyling.
Not just Irene, the other members will also share reference images and ideas.
Especially Wendy, she would show me a lot of reference photos from overseas. As
such, all of the members are like my inspiring muses.
What would you choose
as each member’s best hair style?
For Irene, the ‘onion
bangs’ and ‘choppy bangs’ styles. It is the biggest change in styling attempt
after debut, and Irene liked them as well. I think it’s a style that adds on to
Irene’s loveliness. For Seulgi, as expected, the ‘choppy bangs’ style. Ever
since before cutting it, I would use clip-in bangs or look for a variety of
images, and I cut it after worrying a lot. Lots of people have said that
Seulgi’s choppy bangs are very classy and she digested them well so I felt
good. Wendy is the prettiest when she had no fringe and decorated with ombré hairstyle. Much of Wendy’s opinions
went into this style. For Joy, as expected, it is the red color hair. I think
it is a hair color that amplifies Joy’s looks. Short hair for Yeri! I think it
really fits her.
Amongst the stylings
that you have yet to try, are there any styles that you want to use on the
members?
As a whole, I want to
try the styles that I have not tried yet. No matter whether it’s short hair or
unique hair colors!
There aren’t any
places as busy as the backstage. Especially with 5 members, I think it would
have been even busier. How was the backstage atmosphere during the concert?
Not sure if it was
because everyone was extremely nervous on the first day, it was a rush to match
the timing to appear on stage. When it comes to the last day, the members were
more relaxed. Especially Irene, she was so calm and even checked the hair
accessories in place of me. Seulgi was able to use the hairdryer to tidy up her
hair herself, and when I looked for Yeri to fix her hair, she would have
already finished preparing and waiting to go up on stage (laughs).
How was Red Velvet
like backstage?
Not only me, all the
staff were shocked. Even though it’s their first concert, they did extremely
well. It felt as if I could also feel their excitement and overwhelming
emotions. Every time I hear the members singing from the backstage, I would be
reminded of the times we spent to get here and it was very touching.
Lastly, please leave a
message for Red Velvet who have digested the first concert splendidly.
Actually, I worried a
lot at first. What do you mean first concert, just thinking about it makes me
so nervous. But this is Red Velvet who did so well till the point where I felt
ashamed for having worried in the first place! The fact that I was able to be
with you guys makes me so lucky. Thank you for always putting trust and leaving
it to the flawed me. Let’s work hard running until Red Velvet’s 100th concert!!!
Memory Dial
Red Velvet
Amongst everyone in <Red Room>, the ones who
went back with the most overwhelming emotions are non-other than the Red Velvet
members. Red Velvet, whom, for
the very first time, stood on their own solo concert, one which was filled with
fans and audiences. Their honest and warm reminiscences will be revealed
through one to one interviews with the members.
IRENE
Also, it’s the first concert we ever had with only
people who cheer and love us. From the members who’ve made the concert possible
together, to the fans who have cheered passionately at the concert hall. I am
really grateful for everything from the preparation process till the end of the
concert.
Please talk about how
you felt when the first concert
<Red Room> was confirmed.
When I heard that the
show was confirmed, at first, I was very curious how our first concert will be
like, and how it would be made. After that, I worried about whether many people
would come to watch our show. After hearing the show’s concept from Director
Shim Jae Won, rather than being worried, I had a lot of anticipation for Red
Velvet’s first concert <Red Room>. I think it would be a fun time for
both us who are performing, as well as the audience who are watching, so I
think I was focused entirely solely on preparing for the show.
If you are to choose
the greatest appeal of <Red Room>?
The show can be
divided into a total of 5 parts, I liked how each part’s story can be
connected. Also, through the show, I think I was able to accomplish many of the
fantasies that girls would like to do with their friends. Having pajama parties
together, chatting at the beauty salons while receiving our stylings, having
campfires, it also felt like we all went to the jungle together when singing
‘Zoo’. It felt like we all went to play in Yeri’s room together with the
audience. Though it was special to me, wouldn’t it be special for the audience
as well?
There are many
musical-like elements in the production for <Red Room>. Was it not hard?
It was fun. Even
during television promotions, we would change our expression and gestures
fitting to the song’s atmosphere. That is why I think there wasn’t any huge
difficulties while acting. Also, because Director Shim Jae Won explained in
depth the general story and concept of <Red Room>, what kind of
atmosphere was intended in this song, what kind of flow this set list was made
with, that we were able to understand the show’s contents, and that helped a
lot in our expressions and ments. Something that was a little regretful was that
when we were monitoring the first concert, we said things like ‘ah it’s really
fun!’ with nervous faces and low tones (laughs). Bringing a show’s atmosphere
up was harder than I had thought, so from the next day on, I worked hard paying
attention to those parts.
With the first concert
up ahead, I think your burden as the ‘eldest’ and ‘leader’ would have been
heavy. I am curious about what kind of attitude you worked hard on to face the
concert as the leader.
If I say that I had no
burdens, that would be a lie. There were many choreographies to learn, and the
preparation schedule was tight too. There were also days which were so
overloaded till the point where it was hard to even care for myself. However,
the other members were also in the same exact position as I was. As the eldest
and the leader, I think I needed to take more care and lead the members who are
exhausted. Thankfully, every time that happens, the members follow well. The
team’s atmosphere changes depending on how I lead these friends, and I felt
that myself. While preparing for <Red Room>, it was an opportunity for me
to think more seriously about the members. Because there was a sole goal of a
‘concert’, the members also put in more effort to even cover their part. I have
a clear sense of purpose on how to lead these friends. Since it’s a little hard
to say what kind of leader I am from my own mouth, I would like to borrow the
words that Wendy have said before. She said that when the members are tired, I
would know how to comfort them, and also when we’re playing, I would know how
to look to fit in, I am an ‘adaptable unnie’ who fits to the members’
propensities. I felt very thankful when I heard that.
While preparing for
<Red Room>, you held a pajama party with the members and also did a campfire
at the show. Amongst the girls’ fantasies shown at <Red Room>, was there
anything that you want to do in reality with the members?
I want to go on a trip
with the members. Even though we travelled in our reality program, we have not
gone on one with just us and no cameras. There are many times where we aren’t
able to share our inner thoughts deeply due our busy schedules. I want to go on
a trip together and share all the stories which we haven’t been able to share
all this while. In a special situation such as a trip, wouldn’t we be able to
share each of our thoughts a little more honestly? I have the desire to build
up memories along with beautiful scenery and delicious food.
What is the stage that
left the greatest memory for Irene personally?
Because the stages for
‘Be Natural’ and ‘Automatic’ are styles that I am very fond of, they remain in
my memory. But I think the stage that left the greatest memory was the ending
song ‘Candy’. After walking one round through the audience seats while singing
‘Cool World’ and after expressing my heart towards the audience in the last
ment, we sang the ending song ‘Candy’. Maybe that is the reason why, I felt
choked-up while singing that song. Maybe it’s because ‘Candy’ is a song for the
fans, I am not sure why. While doing that stage, I looked around the whole
concert hall and felt touched. For all 3 days.
As much as you have
felt touched, I think you would have greed about a next concert. Are there any
new sides that you want to show?
Even though there are
new sides that I want to show, I want to show more complete stages for the ones
we have first. For the fans to be able to say ‘this is better than the previous
show’ if we do <Red Room> again. Though I trust that the fans would all
look upon us favorably, while doing <Red Room>, as there were times where
we were clumsy and also parts where we made mistakes, we left regrets. For my
personal wish, I thought about how it would be like to meet the overseas fans
whom we don’t have much opportunities to meet, through the concert. As it is a
rare opportunity, I would like to meet and find them with a good show.
I can feel your
special affection towards <Red Room>. What kind of meaning does it hold
for Irene?
While completing
<Red Room>, I felt once again how amazing and important the synergy that
emerges when many people work together unitedly is. I only have a grateful
heart for Director Shim Jae Won and the numerous staff who have worked hard for
Red Velvet’s show. If we stay up the night practicing, they would stay back
together to help. Also, it’s the first concert we ever had with only people who
cheer and love us. From the members who’ve made the concert possible together,
to the fans who have cheered passionately at the concert hall. I am really
grateful for everything from the preparation process till the end of the
concert.
The fans also had a
placard event. I think the emotions you have at the moment when the placards
were spread out would have been very different as well.
In the past, I was
always in the position watching that happen in sunbae singers’ shows. At that
time, even though it wasn’t my show, I felt like my tears would flow out. When
the placard event that was meant just for us actually spread out in front of my
eyes, I had mixed feelings. It is very difficult to explain my emotions of that
time. I am also reminded of the fans who have worked hard preparing for this
event. Everyone holds up the placard at the same moment. At that moment, the
numerous amount of people in that space are sending us the same heart. It was
really overwhelming, and I am very thankful for the fact that they prepared
that for us.
Lastly, do you have
any messages to convey to the members who have prepared for the show together?
Ah, that’s hard.
Actually, while preparing for the show, we could understand each other just by
eye contacts, so I didn’t say it out. The preparation period for the show
wasn’t long, but even so, I liked that we were able to know more about new
parts which we didn’t know about each other in that time. I could feel us
becoming stronger and firmer, and it makes me certain that we can continue this
mutually beneficial relationship in which we care even more for each other in
the future. Good job everyone, you’ve worked hard. Actually, I can’t think of anything
other than ‘You’ve worked hard!’ (laughs). Really good job, everyone.
SEULGI
I think the energy I’ve received from the show gave me great strength even after the show had ended. I
resolved to work harder remembering the cheers I have received from then.
First concert <Red
Room>, I
think your sentiments would have been very different.
Debuting in 2014, there came to be many songs
made under Red Velvet’s name. The fact that we have our own stage with our own
songs in itself holds a very deep meaning. While watching sunbaes’ concerts
ever since I was a trainee, I would think ‘would I be able to stand on that
kind of concert stage some day? Will this number of fans come?’. I really liked
it so much that my dream is able to come true. When the concert was confirmed,
I think I worried a lot together with the members on how to present a better
show.
While
preparing for the first concert, was there anything you were worried or afraid
of?
I was very worried. Because we had to learn numerous stages quickly, I
think I always checked the set list. The things I have learnt, the parts where
I am lacking amongst them, and also the things I have yet to learn and more, I
managed the schedule thoroughly. Because we have not learnt multiple choreographies
all in a day before, all the members worried a lot as well. Everyone worked
really hard on practicing even up till the day before the first concert. After
completing the concert safely, I even gained courage such as ‘since we’ve
accomplished this, other things would be no problem!’ (laughs).
There is something you’ve
specially prepared for the concert, right?
I wanted to communicate and breathe together with the fans, so I
researched on ways to induce responses. My voice tone is not suitable for
shouting, and also because I have never tried it before, I was worried if it
would be awkward or funny. Though I don’t know what the fans think about it
(laughs). While watching sunbaes’ stages, I would think about what kind of ment
would be good, and looked out for right timings throughout the show! I really
wanted to try saying ‘Make some noise!!!’. Fortunately, the fans cheered
loudly. Although I prepared the ments going for the first concert, from the
next show onwards, I wanted to be confident and raise the atmosphere naturally.
If you are to choose a special
point of <Red Room>?
Not only just Red Velvet’s songs and performances, wouldn’t it be the
musical-like elements? It was my first
time doing a show while acting so it was very fun. In fact, I gained courage to
able to express more diverse facial expressions in music programs after the
concert. Through the concert, I think the stage became more comfortable.
Have you looked for the fans’
responses after completing <Red Room>? What kind of responses left an
impression for you?
There were many people who said that <Red Room> was fun. While
looking at fans’ responses, I thought ‘we succeeded!’ (laughs). The review that
said that the concert was able to satisfy each fan’s preferences through the
diverse constructs and concepts especially left an impression for me.
Each member had a solo dance
for the ‘Be Natural’ stage. The director had said that all the members felt
great burden. How was it for Seulgi?
After Wendy’s song ended, I was the first one up for the solo dance. I
felt very burdened with the thought that I have to kick off well in order for
the other members to feel do well confidently. Especially the first time when I
learnt the solo dance, because it was a dance style which I have not tried
before, it was so difficult. I’m the type who can’t stand on stage if I feel
uneasy. Despite that, because I practice every day with the help and support of
those around me, I think I was able to hold on to my trembling heart.
If you have any anecdotes from
preparing the show, please talk about it.
The whole time practicing, all the members were having a really hard
time. I felt like we shared that sentiment through eye contacts, what’s
interesting is that as long as it was time to eat, everyone’s eyes regained
vitality. We ate a lot of high calorie food like jokbal, pizza, etc that time. After
eating, we would practice again with overflowing energy. Maybe that’s why, even
when I ate so much, I still lost weight.
I heard that your family came
to watch the show. Amongst the things that your family or friends have said
after the concert, was there anything that left an impression for you?
I discovered my family during the show. My parents were looking at me
and cheering, my older brother came with his friends on another day and he was
keeping an eye on me with his arms folded. He came to the waiting room after
the concert, and the first thing he said was ‘ya, everyone is pretty except for
you’ (laughs). Even so, he also said ‘you did well, you were cool’. He talked
about the reactions of the fan sitting beside him during the show and felt
proud about it, and I could feel my brother’s sincerity. Even though his
messenger profile picture is a photo with other member(s) that is not me…
If there is another solo stage
in the next concert, what kind of stage would you like to show?
I want to be absorbed in the stage myself. Up till now, I have my own mold:
‘just this much’. I want to break that mold and express to my heart’s content on
stage. Therefore, my dream is to put on an overwhelming stage, one which the
audience would forget to cheer when they see it.
What kind of artiste would you
like to succeed as in the future?
As expected, I want to perform better. I never want to look disheveled
on stage. I feel upset on days where I didn’t perform well. I feel that for me,
without practice, I wouldn’t be able to show off my talents on the spot. I want
to shed that and become an artiste whom is able to shine brighter in Red Velvet’s
stage and performances.
We can’t leave out talks about
the fans’ event. How did you feel when you saw the placards?
I would also participate in the placard events
when I go to sunbaes’ shows. When I spread the card out, I spread it out
like bang! with my sincerely supporting heart. Everyone who came to <Red
Room> would all have held the placards up with that heart as well. While
feeling the hearts that they were sending us, I thought inside me. ‘Ah, it was
right for me to become a singer!’
Please share your thoughts on the completion of
<Red Room>.
Through <Red Room>, I realized how amazing it is to become one with
the members, the numerous staff, as well as the fans. Therefore, I think the energy I’ve received from
the show gave me great strength even after the show had ended. I resolved to
work harder remembering the cheers I have received from then. I thought of
wanting to be with the fans once more through these kinds of stages! Thank you
everyone!
Lastly, please leave any message you would
like to convey to the members who have worked hard together.
We have really ran without
rest in 2017. Despite that, I am thankful that everyone focused on our first
concert and did well. During the practice period and throughout the concert, I
sincerely felt that we are one heart and one will, and that it was fortunate that it was done with our members. No matter when,
let’s be a Red Velvet that understands and takes care of each other just like
now!
WENDY
My dream is to be a singer, I am just doing what I
want to do, but the fact that I could even receive love from so many people while
doing what I want makes me so grateful. I think it was a good choice for me to
become a singer. I don’t think I can ever forget the look on the fans.
How did you feel right
before the opening stage at <Red Room>?
There is really only one
thing I can think of. ‘Don’t make
mistakes in the first choreography when we appear, never make any mistakes!’ I
had an ominous feeling that because I was so nervous, I might make a mistake
even though it was an easy choreography. If I make a mistake at the start, I
was worried that the show wouldn’t go well till the end. I kept repeating the
choreography for the opening song at the backstage. Even though the staff who
was in charge of announcements was right beside me, I paid no regards (laughs).
Fortunately, the opening stage was completed with no mistakes.
While doing <Red Room>, was there
anything that left a great impression for you or something to your liking?
The concept for <Red Room> is ‘A midsummer night’s dream, Yeri’s room’. I really liked the concept. It was very different in that Red Velvet’s charms are expressed in a space of a ‘room’, and the director completed a colorful show by melting diverse styles of songs into the set list. Not only that, the staff have put in a lot of devotion to create the pop-up book, stage equipment and more objets, thus the completion level of the concert as a whole was high. Everything was to my liking till the point where I can’t pick just one.

If you could keep a scene of the show
forever, which scene would you like to keep?
The scene where the fans
looked at us while waving fan lights! Actually, I was so nervous on the first
day that I was only able to see the fans’ faces in the latter part of the show.
They were looking at us and waving the fan lights together, it was so beautiful
and touching. I put in effort to capture that scene with my eyes. It’s still
fresh in my memory. That scene.
It seems like Wendy likes fan lights a
lot. Is there any reason why you especially like fan lights?
There is no such concept as
fan lights overseas. But you can see that a lot in concert venues in Korea, and
the colors are all different for different singers too. If I stand on a stage
shared with other singers, I can see the different fan light colors at the
concert venue. Seeing a concert hall filled with only Red Velvet’s color in
<Red Room>, my sentiments were extraordinary. Actually, I feel really
very blessed just with the fact that I am able to perform for the fans who love
us, together with our members whom I trust and love the most. But seeing the
fan light waves, should I say that the happiness I felt was doubled? I think
there is a special strength in fan lights (laughs).
You sang ‘Last Love’ during your solo
stage. I think it is not easy to pull off a song that requires good singing
ability all alone on a big stage.
Before standing on stage, I
kept thinking that I need to do well, but when I stood on stage, I felt that
the members’ vacancies are really big. Therefore, I was very nervous, and I
tried hard not to make it obvious. After my solo sage, the members will unfold their
individual performances in ‘Be Natural’, so therefore, if I am nervous or make
any mistakes, that would bring damage to the members. I think I sang hard
while continuously thinking of the members’ stages after mine. Though it wasn’t
a 100-point stage, since it has ended, I want to be satisfied with it.
Worried that Wendy would be burdened with
the ‘Last Love’ stage, the members worried a lot. The members have also asked
the director separately about whether there is any way to help Wendy. Does
Wendy know about that too?
Really? I didn’t know. I knew
that the members were worried about me, but this is my first time hearing this.
Actually, because I am slow on choreographies, while preparing for the concert,
I talked less and had a very hard time. But in the middle of it all, I felt
even more burden with the solo stage, so maybe that’s why the members put in
more consideration. Actually, the members too had a hard time while preparing
for their ‘Be Natural’ solo performances. During practice, the atmosphere where
we give each other ‘fightings’ and encouragement creates a great synergy
effect, but I wasn’t able to do that. Thus, I feel extremely sorry. Hearing
that the members worried for me makes me tear up.
I heard that Wendy’s parents came on the
last day of the concert.
Yes, that day was the first
time my parents saw my performance in reality. My parents would not sleep at
night to catch my radio schedules in Canada. They would also meticulously
monitor my performances and give opinions such as ‘you look swollen today’, ‘your
live is good today’, but the fact that they will come to watch my performance
personally is very heart fluttering. I worked really hard because I wanted to show
them a great performance. After the concert ended, my parents said that I’ve
worked hard while wiping their tears. I received a text from my mother later on
and I cried a lot after reading it. It wrote ‘It was such an amazing
performance till the point where I thought why did I disapprove when you first
said you wanted to be a singer, I am so proud of the fact that you are my
daughter. In the future, I hope you will be able to do the things that you like
happily. Thank you for being my daughter’.
You would be having more concerts in the
future, are there any performances you want to show?
I want to perform the stages
we haven’t been able to show in <Red Room>. There are b-side tracks which
aren’t included in this concert, also, as we released our full album <Perfect
Velvet> after that, there are more new songs that we can perform. Putting up
an acapella version medley stage or creating a stage where we can sing with the
fans. I also want to try a fun show that is festival-like.
When you saw the fans’ event, what kind of
thoughts did you have?
It made me realize that we
are receiving love from the fans. I saw the faces of the fans who held the
placards up, are they were looking upon us really warmly. My heart feels full
knowing that this many people likes us. Although I won’t be able to know all
hearts of the fans, I could certainly know that they cherish us. My dream is to be a singer, I am just
doing what I want to do, but the fact that I could even receive love from so
many people while doing what I want makes me so grateful. I think it was a good
choice for me to become a singer. I don’t think I can ever forget the look on
the fans.
Lastly, please leave any message you would
like to convey to the members who have completed <Red Room> together.
While preparing for the
concert, if I had been a little brighter and encourage the members so that I
can be their source of strength, I think that we would be able to create and
even more fun <Red Room>. Even so, I am very thankful to the members who
have taken care of me. Every time I talk about the concert with the members, I
would continuously tell them sorry and thank you internally, but I couldn’t
express them into words. Of course, though I believe that the members know of my
intentions, I would like to borrow this space and convey to them that I am
super super grateful that they have always become my strength then and now.
JOY
That was the moment when I received confirmation that
we were making this show in harmony with the fans. I felt choked up. So this is
why people do concerts! Thinking about it, I want to do it again!
I heard you have a
special relationship with Director Shim Jae Won who have planned <Red
Room>.
Director Sim Jae Won is the person whom I trust and follow the most. He
taught me ever since I was a trainee. He also took part in our album production
process, so when he explained about <Red Room> to us, I realized that as
expected, he knows the group Red Velvet very well. Being able to work on a big
project with the director holds a deep meaning (for me).
I think <Red Room>’s set list is
hard to pull off. I heard that Joy had a very hard time with stamina during the
rehearsals.
Unfortunately, I have really
weak stamina. Preparing for the show in a short time and standing on the
concert stage for 3 days in general is a huge challenge for me. Since I know
that I have a weak stamina, I kept thinking ‘as long as I do well, this show would have no problems’. After finishing the rehearsal on the
previous day of the concert, my whole body ran out of energy. In addition, not
sure if it’s because of the nervousness, the food I ate did not digest well so
I think I did not do the first concert in the best condition. But what was
fascinating was that I was able to gain strength all throughout the concert by
looking at the packed filled audience seats. I think I did it with will power.
Other than the burden from your stamina,
were there other difficult points?
‘Be Natural’s solo stage.
The burden that comes with having to fill the performance stage alone was very
heavy. I was afraid about whether I would fit the stage. I talk to the members
every time I feel tired and overcame it with repeated practice. Even though I
went up the stage acting composed, I was actually extremely nervous. I chanted
to myself internally ‘I am the most charming. I can do it!’ (laughs). For the first show, the floor was a little wet due to the dry ice, I slipped
a little while doing a turning dance. The stage equipment was switched from the
second show onwards so it was all right. Looking back, I am thankful to the director
for giving me the opportunity to do a solo dance. Also, while I was performing,
the fans shouting ‘Park Sooyoung! Park Sooyoung!’ pierced through my in-ears.
It was a very thrilling feeling at that time.
After the first concert, it seems like
you’ve fallen into the charms of a concert.
Yes! In the case of
broadcasts, we have to look at the camera’s red light while performing, and I
always have regrets because 3 minutes aren’t enough to show all of my charms. I
think concerts are very attractive because I can look at the fans while I
perform. I can check the fans’ reactions immediately with my eyes and share my
emotions better, I feel that these aspects are very special and fun. I came to
make cringeworthy expressions or actions which I definitely would not have done
usually. I became more motivated to become the fan’s energy and I worked hard
on expressing, even if it’s just a little more.
Was that any stage that left a special
meaning for Joy?
‘Cool World’. We sang that
song while walking one whole round through the audience seats. It was an
opportunity to see the fans up close. I tried my best to make eye contacts with
each and every one. I could feel the fans’ supportive heart and sincere love
towards us in their eyes. I kept thinking of the fans’ expressions which I have
made eye contacts with even after the concert. That time was very memorable and
hence ‘Cool World’ became a very special song.
Did you monitor the fans’ responses after
the show ended?
Not only <Red Room>, I
am the type who will usually look at fans’ responses frequently. Before, the
fans would dote on me as Red Velvet’s maknae and also because I was young. Recently,
they told me ‘you’ve grown up well!’ a lot. Actually, I worried about whether I
would look as if I was clumsily pretending to be sexy through the ‘Be Natural’
stage or recent promotions, but it was fortunate that there are a lot of positive
responses. But even when I think about it myself, I think I’ve grown up well
(laughs).
I think Joy’s ending ment during the first
day holds great meaning for the fans as well. You said that you felt like you’ve
fallen into a slump lately, but you are able to get back together while
preparing for <Red Room>. I am curious about how you felt at that time.
When I was a trainee, I was
very passionate, putting my all into practicing every day with a goal to ‘debut’.
But after debuting, because we were busying promoting, I was pressed for time
and couldn’t practice as much compared to trainee days. Furthermore, it even
became something natural. Even though the me who is lacking is always at the
back of my mind, but it was tough for me to even digest the schedules. Therefore,
I think I was able to get back together while preparing for the concert. I was
able to re-think about my present singing and dancing abilities, and I was also
able to stay back anytime to practice in order to fill up the parts where I was
lacking. It felt like I went back to the trainee days so I felt really good. I
have also felt energy such as ‘Let’s do well! Let’s work hard!’ from the members.
I think I worked harder because I have received positive energy. I wanted to
confess my feelings honestly to the fans, so I said it during the ending ment.
Choreographer Ryu So Hee chose Joy as the
member she looks forward to the most in the future. How do you feel?
Really? I am very thankful
that unnie said it like that. She is someone who knows very well that I have a
lot of greed hence I would want to show a variety of sides, and someone who
worries together with me. When I practice dancing, I would stare at my own
reflection in the mirror piercingly. Because I think that the reflection of me
in the mirror must think that I myself is an attractive person in order for
other people to like me. But what do you mean unnie said that, I need to buy her
a meal some time (laughs).
As much greed you have, I think you would
have a stage you would like to show in the future.
There are a lot of
refreshing stages in <Red Room>. After the show, <Perfect Velvet>
album was released and there are also lots of great songs in that album. Since
the songs have become more matured, I want to show a little bit more of Red
Velvet’s maturity in the next concert. Personally, I really like the music
videos of Christina Aguilera’s ‘Candyman’ and Beyoncé’s ‘Love on Top’. I have the
greed to try a stage that has retro style’s wit.
We can’t leave out talks about
the fans’ event. Please share your thoughts on the placard event.
What I felt all throughout the show is that <Red Room> is a show
made together with fans. Actually, the size of one placard isn’t huge. But when
all the fans fill up the hall by holding up the placards at the same moment, it
is very, very huge. I received the feeling as if I got absorbed into the event at
that moment. Also, that was the moment when I
received confirmation that we were making this show in harmony with the fans. I
felt choked up. So this is why people do concerts! Thinking about it, I want to
do it again!
Lastly, please share your
thoughts on completing the show as well as leave any message you would like to convey
to the members.
Thank you so much to everyone who has worked hard
for <Red Room>. Also, I could feel each and every fan’s energy and
support. Therefore, I think that is why I was able to gain energy. While
preparing for the concert, the members embraced the exhausted me a great deal, thank
you so much to the members who have become my strength, allowing me to persevere.
There were members who were tired from busy schedules, and sometimes members
who were sick. More than anything, since health is the priority, I hope
everyone would be healthy. As much as the members have taken care of me, let
this year be the year that I take care of the members too! Hwaiting for this
year too!
YERI
I am very, very thankful to the fans who think of us. Also,
thinking about how everyone felt this overwhelming emotion together at the same
venue, the fact that I am able to experience
this kind of moment in my life felt really special to me.
With Red Velvet’s
first concert up ahead, what kind of thoughts did you have the most?
I wanted fill the show with charms that the group known as Red Velvet
possess. Because the meaning behind a first concert is very big, I also wanted to
add in our suggestions. Therefore, before <Red Room> as a title was
fixed, I would come up with a variety of names alone and send texts to the
director. Also, we have a lot of amazing songs amongst the b-side tracks we
have, the thought of performing these songs on stage made me have high
anticipations. We never had these kinds of opportunities before.
Amongst the suggestions Yeri have
contributed, the one that was applied was ‘Shark Family Song’.
That’s right! This song is a
song that the kids of <Superman Returns> prepared for me when I made an appearance
on the show. While watching the performance of the clumsy and cute children, I
received pure and clear energy. Therefore, I usually sing this song with the members
frequently and the members liked this song as well. I wanted to share this
energy with the fans. Fortunately, the director looked upon this suggestion favorably, and the fans like it as well so I
feel very proud. Other than this, I also gave ideas such as decorating the
stage by cosplaying Sakura from <Cardcaptor Sakura> and putting on a
witty stage by using diverse animation images. I like animation (laughs).
The primary background for <Red
Room> is ‘Yeri’s room’. I think this would have been special for Yeri.
I don’t think of
the ‘Yeri’ as myself. Just like how the unnies are described as 4 fairies who
came to play in the room, I acted as a character with the same name ‘Yeri’.
Therefore, it felt like I went to play in that room and I was able to have fun
all 3 days as if I was in a dream.
What is the charm of <Red Room>?
The whole show
of <Red Room> is very conceptual, and the stages can be connected into
one story in general. Therefore, even the ments were prepared fitting to the
characters we were playing, just like a musical. <Red Room> was made with
one stalk of story, similar to a musical or movie, and I think we all acted as
our characters within it. I think this is <Red Room>’s biggest difference
with other shows and also its greatest charm.
Then if so, what kind of character is Yeri
usually in Red Velvet? You have a strong ‘lively maknae’ image.
Actually, my
personality isn’t that lively. I think many people think that way because I am
the maknae and due to my image that is spread externally. Actually, I am the
eldest daughter in my household with younger siblings with a huge age gap. The
reason why it is hard to call myself ‘lively maknae’ is because although there
are times where I would hop around when I’m feeling good, on the contrary,
there are also times when I feel down. Therefore, it is hard to define my
personality with just one adjective. Of course, I work hard to live a bright
and positive life (laughs).
What was the most memorable moment during
the show?
At first, I
appear on a bed along with thunder sounds. As I enter, the first thing I see
are the fan light waves spread out amongst the audience seats and I cannot
forget that scene. Although I can’t remember every single moment of the show, I
will continue to remember the fans’ cheers and the scene of them waving their
fan lights, even in the future. Actually, waving your hands and cheering for anyone
for more than 2 hours isn’t an easy thing to do. I felt the weight of the fans’
hearts. I am very thankful. Because I wanted to see more of the fans, I think I
put in effort to look at the fans’ faces without breaking eye contact. The fans
in front who have made eye contacts with me might have probably felt burdened
(laughs).
<Red Room> was completed
successfully. I think you would have greeds about the next show as well.
I think I will
continue giving ideas for the next show. I think the director might feel tired
(laughs)? Personally, even if it’s not at a concert, there is a stage that I
definitely want to show. I have a lot of interests in writing lyrics and songs.
Even now, I have lots of lyrics that I’ve written. In the future, I want to let
the fans listen to the song which I have made while thinking of them. When
people find it hard to personally express their hearts, they would write
letters. The song is made with that kind of heart. But to call it a ‘fan song’
is burdensome, I want to say that it’s a song that expresses my heart shyly. I
think it is too early to promise that I will definitely reveal this song, so as
of now, I will keep it as a wish.
I think I understand the heart you want to
express to the fans. On the other hand, the fans have also done a special event
for Red Velvet.
Because I have a lot of
tears, I cried on all 3 days looking at the placard event the fans did for us.
The phrases were different for all 3 days. ‘Hello, our pride’, ‘Thank you, our
happiness’, ‘I’ll gather all the feelings of this moment’. They are all
touching and lovely phrases, and the more I think about it, I think they are
really cool sayings. The fans all held up the placards at the same timing, and my
tears starting coming out as soon as I saw that. I am very, very thankful to the fans who think of
us. Also, thinking about how everyone felt this overwhelming emotion together
at the same venue, the fact that I am able to experience this kind of
moment in my life felt really special to me.
This is the first concert, are there any
parts you personally felt regretful about?
The fact that
moving carts can’t be used in the Olympic Hall is regretful. Every time I watch
sunbaes shows, this is the stage equipment that I really want. There aren’t
many opportunities to get up-close to the fans seated in the far distance. Of
course, though we were able to walk around the venue while singing ‘Cool World’,
the regret of not being able to get closer and see them longer is huge. Also, I
think it would be more fun if we use moving carts! If the next concert is
planned, it would be great if we have a chance to ride on moving carts and meet
the fans!
Lastly, please leave a message for the
members who have put up the show together.
2017 was a busy
year for us. We could have neglected each other, but on the contrary, I received
great heaps of help from unnies. In the future, I too want to take more care of
the people around me, including unnies. Including performing for <Red
Room> together, I am thankful towards the members for the whole year. More
than anything, since health is the priority, I hope that I, including the
members and the people with us, will all be healthy. May this year be a healthy
year both mentally and physically! Let’s have fun singing together on stage in
the future as well!
CHAPTER 02: VELVET STAGE OFF
What are you curious
about?
Red Velvet
What kind are things goes on in the rooms of Red Velvet? The trivial and
personal daily things that happen not in <Red Room>, but in the girls
real ‘room’. We invite everyone to the Red Velvet’s story that is hard to take
a glimpse at!
IRENE
Because everyone who are working with me are very
important and precious to me, I
will always sort my thoughts about them while watching them.
What meaning does ‘room’
hold for Irene?
I think a ‘house’ or ‘my room’ needs to be a space where I can rest comfortably
myself. When I sleep in my room, watch movies or other things that I want to
do, I feel comfortable and find stability. So, I created a comfortable
atmosphere with yellow and warm lighting. Because I place great importance in
sleep, there was a period of time where I was very interested in beds and
beddings. If I become independent in the future, I think I would decorate my
house like that? I want to fill it with things that I like and feel comfortable
with.
I wonder if it’s because you are a
‘homebody’. Are there times where you yourself realize you are a ‘homebody’?
I was watching TV out at the
living room. When a member goes out, I would greet them ‘goodbye’ right? But as
time passes and that member comes back, I was still at the living room sitting
at my place, that was when I felt it. ‘Ah, I have always been at home, I have
been sitting at one place for too long’ (laughs).
Since you like being at home, I think you
would have many items you find precious in your room.
There’s many.
There’s really a lot (laugh). Even so, if I were to choose a few that I really
treasure, it would be the letters which I’ve received from the members, friends
or fans, and the diary I write in. Also, I would usually fall asleep while
using a beam projector to watch a variety of videos, so the beam projector and
speakers are also amongst items that I treasure a lot. Also, the one that I
can’t leave out is the bed. My bed is precious (laughs).
What do you usually put around your
precious bed?
First of all,
the beam projector and speakers are at my bedside. Beside that is the book I
read and my earphone. Also, I usually put a hairband beside so that I can tie
my hair anytime. I always put my iPad on the bed, and my diary and the pens I
use under the bed. Saying this, it feels like I can solve anything from my bed,
and that is correct (laughs). I put the items that I use frequently within the
range where I can reach from my bed.
Are there any items you want that the other
members have?
None. I’m the
type to buy the things that I want straight away. I personally like to buy junk.
Although I just buy them but don’t use them well (laughs). I buy clothes and
notebooks but I don’t use them. My mom thought that I wear the same clothes
often because I don’t have clothes, but I actually have a lot. Ah thinking
about it, when I went to Japan for a schedule last time, I bought a CD that I
wanted. But when I went back to the dorm and thought about it, I don’t have a
CD player (laughs). If one of our members have a CD player, I think I would
want it.
Do you have any recent interests?
I have always been most
interested in ‘me’. I always think about this and that about myself. But
recently, I have lots of interests in the people around me. Because everyone who are working with me
are very important and precious to me, I will always
sort my thoughts about them while watching them.
Since you think about yourself
a lot, I think you would have also thought about the fields you are interested in besides being a
singer.
If I work in other fields, I
want to try acting. People speak and act differently in a given situation. I am
curious how it would be like to be another person. I am a person who would occasionally
think about whether left foot first or right foot first when putting on shoes. Even when watching dramas, I would watch
each character’s behavior attentively. Also, everyone has curiosity about ‘how
should I act in this situation?’, thus I would like to act and experience other
people’s life or thoughts.
I will ask you the last
question. When Irene opens the room door, the world that Irene wants will
unfold. What kind of scene would you like to see unfold before your eyes?
Though it is very ordinary, a house I live with my
family. Especially, it would be great if the scene of my family sitting around
the dining table and eating unfolds. In the past, I have received a question
from someone ‘what place do you feel the most comfortable being in?’. What came
to my mind at that time was either home or my family eating together. My answer
to this question is the same as the thoughts that I had at that time.
SEULGI
I go for walks on my own, watch movies, and eat well alone
too. Actually, as I am embarrassed to eat alone at crowded places, I often go
to restaurants where there are
less people.
Is there any kind of
room you’ve dreamed of since young?
I really wanted to install a canopy. Because it’s like a princess.
Because we couldn’t install a canopy, my dad installed a mosquito net, and I
remember it being very cosy inside. I think my preference has changed these
days. I
like neat and practical furniture. Especially mattresses! If we move houses the
next time, I’m going to buy an extremely good mattress. Then I think I would be
able to wake up refreshed every morning!
What is Seulgi’s no.1 treasure in the
dorm?
The diary I’ve written since
young, practice journal, and letters the members have written for me. I
treasure items that are memorable to me very much. Not too long, I took out the
letters I’ve received up till now and looked through them. The birthday letter
that Wendy decorated on a vanguard sheet during our trainee days is very
interesting. It’s a letter with a friendship certificate and
heart-shaped colored papers pasted on it, and it reminds me of her making it
that time. She wanted to make it secretly so she would hide and work on it, but
I was actually aware of it (laughs). My photos are pasted on it too, not sure
what kind of printer she used but all the photos are black and white. She put so
much effort into decorating that when I received it, it was messy because of
the many finger
stains. But the contents are very packed on that huge
construction paper. It is really touching.
What item do you put nearest to your
beside?
Charger! I use my phone a
lot before I sleep. I also put a humidifier at the topside of my bed, but
because it is troublesome to replace the water, I haven’t been using it since
some time ago (laughs).
Do you have any hobbies or items you’re
interested in recently?
Film camera! I think I like
analog sensibilities. Digital cameras somehow don’t fit me very well. If a
printed photo is pretty, I would feel really good. Recently, I took a lot of
photos of the members. While promoting, there are many opportunities to
encounter pretty sets. On a usual day, if I see pretty items when I pass by, I
would take a photo of it. Rocks, tress, flowers etc.
I think you would go out with your camera
a lot?
I like going out. I go for walks on my own, watch movies,
and eat well alone too. Actually, as I am embarrassed to eat alone at crowded
places, I often go to restaurants where there are less people. Also, Irene
unnie’s preferences matches with mine so I like visiting kidult shops together
too! On those days, I would take loads of photos of cute stuff.
You said you like analog sensibilities and
write diaries, by chance, do you also decorate your diary?
When I was young, I would
buy loads of stickers and pens and decorate it with drawings. I don’t do that
these days, I’m the kind who would use it to organize my schedules or write
down movie reviews. When I need to sort out my thoughts, I would write them
down and organize them.
Are there any items you want that belongs
to the other members?
Joy’s massage machine? A few
days ago, there was red light coming out through the cracks of Joy and Yeri’s
room door. I was curious so I opened the door, and Joy was reading her script while
exposed under an infrared heater. Joy is a mania of massagers and health
products. I am going to try borrow it from her once (laughs).
I felt this while doing the interview, I
think I know why your nickname is ‘bear Seulgi’ because of your easygoing
personality.
This nickname came about because
f(x)’s Amber unnie calls me ‘teddy bear’. Actually, I don’t think my actions
are slow. While watching ‘bear Seulgi’ videos that the fans made, I unknowingly
understood why. I think my personality is gradually becoming meek so even I myself
is confused. Ah, I am originally not a slow person like a bear!
Lastly, if Seulgi’s room door is opened, the world
that Seulgi wants will unfold. When the door is opened, where do you think
you’ll be able to go?
Mm, wouldn’t it be my home?
I went on a trip to Fukuoka with my family recently, and when I returned, I went
back to my own house instead of the dorm. Because it’s been so long since I’ve
went back, I felt sorry towards my family. Also, home is so comfortable. I want
to go home and eat a meal of my mum’s cooking and walk around the neighborhood.
WENDY
I love listening to music. Though I don’t really enjoy listening to classical or
hard rock, I listen to a variety of genres. I also listen and find out what
kind of styles overseas indie music are like.
Does Wendy have a
wannabe room?
A room that I painted myself. I tried it once in the past but failed very
badly. I
got a new wallpaper in the end. I want to decorate my room by DIY. But before
that, I think tidying up the room first is the top priority (laughs).
What do you mean DIY, I heard that you
have good dexterity so you like making this and that.
I’ve liked doing them ever
since I was young. There was a period where I was hooked onto origami, I folded
38 roses according to my dad’s age and gifted them on his birthday. But my dad
was disappointed (laughs). When I think about it now, I don’t know why I did
that. I like doing this and that with my hands and I like giving gifts that are
full of sincerity. If I make and decorate the gifts while thinking about how
much the other person will like it when they receive it, even if the making
process is tiring, I forget about it all. There is a reward in making them.
Are there any memorable gifts?
The letter I gave to Seulgi
during trainee days. Perhaps the letter that I gave to Seulgi with that much
amount of sincerity in it will be the first and also the last one. While
spending our trainee days together, same-age friend Seulgi became a huge source
of strength for me. She is a friend whom I have so much to thank for, and then
one day I unknowingly found myself cutting up hearts and putting in effort in
decorating a letter. Ah, also, I’ve packed lunchboxes for the manager oppas
recently. These days, there are a lot of schedules so they must have been
tired. Even when we reach home and rest, the manager oppas still have to send
the other staffs back home or go to the office to work for the schedule for the
next day. I feel thankful and sorry so in order to restore their energy, I made
lunchboxes with various menus such as abalone, braised short ribs and more. I
think that is probably be the first and last time. I can’t do it again
(laughs).
Amongst the items in your room, what is
Wendy’s no.1 treasure?
Mm, there is nothing that I
can think of right away. Maybe I don’t love my room. To choose one item, my LP
records collection! I like collecting LP records. Fans who know that I like LP
records even gifted them to me and I have been keeping them well. Also, if the
speaker that I am sharing with Seulgi can also be considered mine, then the
speaker will also be my no.1 treasure, but too bad since it’s shared, it’s
disqualified!
I can feel your big love for music usually.
The members said that the music you recommend are all good.
I love listening to music. Though I don’t really enjoy listening to classical
or hard rock, I listen to a variety of genres. I also listen and find out what
kind of styles overseas indie music are like. I listen to a lot of jazz music
that has no lyrics, and when I want to do healing, I listen to songs with
lyrics. I have posted this on SNS before, it’s a song called ‘Chinese New Year’
by SALES, a song that Seulgi liked.
What kind of items do you put
around your bed?
I put many kinds of stuff. If you step into my room,
you’ll feel that it is very hectic (laughs). Firstly, I have my laptop on my
bed so I can play with it immediately anytime. There are also photos I took
with the members. Other than that, there are items which you can classify as
junk everywhere.
I am curious about Wendy’s
goal for 2018.
To go out often! Also, to make
friends! Actually, I am an extreme ‘homebody’. Even on days off, going to the practice
room and back home is daily life for me. My head hurts if I go shopping for too
long so I don’t like that much either. I’m the type to come home early even if
I do go out. From this year onwards, I want to try making more friends and
going out more often. In the past, I found it difficult to make friends. Friends receive a
lot of influence from each other.
Thinking about what kind of influence I would have on the other person and whether
I can be a friend who gives good influence made me fearful. But as I put in
effort to make a variety of friends recently, I thought that I have had too many
fears. In the past, I would only find friends with matching propensities, now I
want to meet a variety of friends and create positive synergy (with them).
Actually, although I don’t have many friends yet, I am going to try hard. I don’t
really watch movies, but I will watch many movies this year!
Lastly, when Wendy’s room door
is open, what kind of world do you want it to be connected to?
Our house in Canada! When I open the door, it would be
great if my family is there to welcome me. I miss you so much, my family.
JOY
I put
more consideration into my styles and also researched on what kind of appearances
I want to show in detailed. I think I have to imprint on the public that I have
diverse images in me, for me to exist in the future.
Does Joy have any
special romance about a ‘room’?
First of all, I really really want to have ‘my own room’. I share a room
with my younger siblings at home and share one with Yeri at the dorm. Maybe it’s
because I have always been sharing rooms with people, I have big romance about ‘my
own room’ in general. If I get to have my own room, the first thing I would do
is adopt a puppy. Therefore, I will decorate the room into a space for me and
my puppy. I am
always waiting! My soulmate puppy!
Then your future
no.1 treasure must be that puppy. What is your current no.1 treasure?
The ‘script’
of the drama I am preparing for. I am immersed into practicing acting while
looking at the script. Actually, my room is very messy now, but I only keep my
scripts (laughs).
You have a lot of
interests in lip colors.
When
I was young, I thought that the lips need to be red in order to be pretty. I couldn’t
accept other colors. But the make-up director helped me to be able to challenge
diverse styles. Naturally, I became more interested about lips, and have a
wider acceptance in switching up styles. Therefore, these days, I am the one
who would suggest new styles first.
Let’s go back to talking about ‘room’. Is
there anything you put nearest to your bed?
Skincare products, body care
products and nutritional supplements are nearest to my bed. I have a lot of
nutritional supplements. I cannot work if I don’t have those. Also, recently, I
love using the ‘infrared heater’ that fans have bought for me as my birthday
present. The effects are good and I want to recommend it to the members too.
Since you’ve recommended, on the contrary, are
there any items you want that belongs to the other members?
I want Seulgi unnie’s clothes
hangers. I have a wardrobe but it’s too cramped. Seulgi unnie’s hangers look
sturdy. I want to know where to buy it! I am also very envious of Seulgi unnie’s
desk. Unnie decorated it very cutely. Listing it all out, it’s all Seulgi unnie’s
belongings (laughs).
Do you have any hobbies or interests you’re
focusing on recently?
Though it’s not a hobby, I
have been continuously practicing on ‘pronunciation’ and ‘vocalization’. I am
also continuously fixing up my way of speaking. I heard that I sound like a child
because of my usual aegyo way of speech. Since I am doing acting and MC now, I
thought that I need to change the way I talk. Also, because I am in the process
of correcting it, my pronunciation and vocalization has gotten very bad
recently. Pronunciation is an important element in singing and acting, therefore
I am trying to overcome it in a good way through repeated practice.
Just as you’ve said, you’re active in a
variety of fields such as singing, MC, acting and more. It is not easy to grab
hold of balance in the midst of it all.
That’s right. I sometimes
feel a little confused myself too. Because the image expected of me in the 3
fields are all different, I think about all 3 images and work hard on
developing them. I am a maknae that raises the atmosphere refreshingly on
<Sugarman 2> and I need to show a femme fatale image that seduces guys in
‘Bad Boy’ promotions. In drama <Tempted>, I play the role of a ‘cold-hearted
woman’ who has no interests in men. Because I don’t want to lose any one, I
want to show that I pull off all these diverse images. Fortunately, I have a
personality that likes to try a variety of things, so I think my current activities
fits well to my personality. I never stop having faith in myself.
Is that the reason why? Your mature
attractiveness stands out. I think it is not only because of your styling
change.
It is because of my styling
change, and it is also because of my changed behavior. I thought that I had to
properly show my maturity during ‘Peek-A-Boo’ promotions. Should I call it the
turning point? I put more consideration into my styles and also researched on
what kind of appearances I want to present in detailed. I think I have to imprint on the public that I have diverse images in me,
for me to exist in the future. During the early days of debut, I had big
thoughts that I had to make the group’s atmosphere bright as the maknae, and
that I had to show a bright image. Now, Yeri is doing the role of a maknae
well, thanks to that, my burden of being a maknae lessened and I am trying out
a variety of things.
Lastly, if the
door to Joy’s room opens, the space that Joy wants will appear. What kind of
space does Joy hopes to have?
It
would be great if it is a room with all four walls blocked so that no
one can come in, with a really comfortable bed placed in it. Ah, it is
definitely not a scary atmosphere! Since I don’t have alone-time and I am
always thinking about the next day’s schedule right until I fall asleep, I want
to sleep peacefully. Also, something important, the infrared heater needs to be
beside. I fall asleep well because of the infrared heater’s white noise
(laughs).
YERI
It is a dream with a beautiful blue lake, and what’s
fascinating is that I’ve dreamt it several times. Therefore, my mum knows about
that dream too. The lake was so memorable, I thought that I should not forget this dream vaguely.
Is Yeri the type to
spend a lot of time in her room?
Yes, but these days I want to change my pattern of living in the room. I
read in a book that it is good to only sleep in a space that is meant for
sleeping. It said that activities like reading books, watching movies, using the
phone or other habits on a bed disrupts your sleep. Eating at the
dining table, watching TV on the sofa, it said that it is good to have a lifestyle
of using furniture for each of their own purpose, so I am working hard on
changing it. I can’t sleep well these days so I hope that the bed would be a
space where I can sleep comfortably.
Then if so, I guess you won’t be putting
items near your bed now?
I still have a book
(laughs). I still haven’t been able to clear away all the items around my bed.
Also, I’ve put a photo frame near my bedside. The photo frame includes photos
of myself and also photos that I’ve taken with close friends. I also have a photo
frame with photos I’ve taken with the members and I’ve kept that frame in
another place. Because I’ve put up so many frames, they kept dropping.
Seems like you like books.
Yes, I don’t discriminate
genres and like them all. I also like writing myself. Occasionally when I feel
tired mentally, I will look around a bookstore for hours and buy a lot of
books. Amongst the books which I have bought, there are mystery novels, poetry
books, there are various types. Although I don’t really read analects. I
especially like writer Keigo Higashino’s mystery novels and I also really like writer
Jung Yoo Jung. While reading, I would think ‘How did they write these stories? How
did they come up with such elaborate stories?’ and be in awe. Every time that
happens, I thought about wanting to write mystery novels.
Is there any book that you want to
recommend to the fans?
It’s a book I’ve read that
has left a deep impression on me. I would like to recommend <What Is Your
Wish?> by Japanese writer Yuko Ohnari. It’s a book that contains interesting
questions that comes and goes between cute married couples, your heart will
feel very warm reading it. The married couple in the book is very lovable.
Since I also like to receive book recommendations, it would be great if fans
would recommend me good books in the future!
What is Yeri’s current no.1 treasure?
Letters and polaroids! There
are really lots of letters that I’ve exchanged. Since I like writing and
receiving letters, letters are precious items to me. Same for polaroids, they
are photos I’ve taken with the members, friends, and family, so it’s a treasure
which I adore a lot.
Are there any items you want that the other
members have?
Ah, I’ve already snatched it
over a few days ago (laughs). Seulgi unnie bought gastrointestinal medicine
from Japan. Since I have a weak stomach, unnie gave me one and the effects were
really good. Unnie said she would give me more, so I brought them to my room at
once. I’m still taking them well these days.
You became an adult recently. What did you
do on 1st of January? Does 20-year-old Yeri have a goal she wants to
accomplish in 2018?
On 1st of
January, after the schedules ended, I drank a glass of wine (laughs). Actually,
I still cannot comprehend the taste of alcohol yet, it was just to commemorate
1st of January. Though it’s too much to call it a goal, in 2018, I
want to take more care of the members, my friends and the precious people
around me. Also, I would like to listen attentively to the good words my
precious people say to me and enjoy a comfortable happiness.
Lastly, when Yeri’s room door is opened,
is there any scene you would like to see?
There’s a dream that I’ve
dreamt of ever since I was young. It is a dream with a beautiful blue lake, and what’s fascinating is that
I’ve dreamt it several times. Therefore, my mum knows about that dream too. The
lake was so memorable, I thought that I should not forget this dream
vaguely. Therefore, when I open the room door, it would be great if that lake
unfolds. I want to know this dream’s secret!

Hello~ this is Irene :)
Our Luvies~ It has been half a year
since Red Room ended, how are you guys?
For me, I would sometimes look for
videos and watch practice videos.

I guess I look for them because I want to

JOY’S HANDWRITTEN LETTER
Luvies 💚 hello~ this is Sooyoungie :D
Even though the weather is so cold now,
when I think about ‘Red Room’ concert, I get reminded of the passion and sweat
of that time and I felt like it got warm really quick haha. Isn’t that right
Luvies? >.<
Looking back at last year, they were
such overwhelming moments till the point where I could say that ‘I was the
happiest’.
I feel a big regret that we were only
able to show (our concert) for a short period of 3 days.
It was a beautiful day where everyone
and us Red Velvet become one heart and one mind.
It would be great if (the day) comes
again! Always thank you and love you 💚 -from Joy💚-
YERI’S HANDWRITTEN LETTER
Hello this is Yeri.
Last summer, we finally met at our own
huge space, one which we have all hoped for again and again right?
Time has already passed so quickly, and
I am now writing this letter at the end of February.
The snow that had fallen so much is
nowhere to be found, and it really feels like Spring is coming now.
Mm..I, Yerim, is trying my best to do
the things I like and meet the people I love and be healthy recently!
Since a long time ago, one of my habits
is to look for the emotions I want now and would need as I live on.
I always think about it, and I think I spend
a longer time pondering about it recently.
It is to live healthily! And then I feel
an emotion named ‘a sense of stability’.
I’ve been searching for it since a long
time ago and I am also finding it now..! No matter how!
There is also something that I always
say as if like a habit, right?
Eat well, sleep well, and be happy
It is something I hope for desperately
and also something I want to tell you guys haha
My ears are always open and I hope that
someday I would be that kind of person for someone too! -Yerimie-
